Yes... not only does Mylandah look like Iffy, Tanya also looks like a smaller, cuter version of Shayla.

Oh yeah... the show also shares most of the same dub artists (although the dub script isn't quite up to the El-Hazard standard). Not sure about the Japanese, but I know Rio Natsuki (Nanami) plays the main character.

Myllandah is my favorite chara in the OVA. Can you guess why?   She bares a remarkable resemblance to a certain somebody.

^_^ Similarly, I think Tanya resembles a shorter, cuter version of Shayla. I'm heartened that you like Mylandah... it makes me think that maybe she'll be redeemed at some point (my main image of her thus far is her bestowing violonce of various kinds on Anna).

A rare disappointment from AIC!

What? AIC making a sub-par TV version of an OVA? *cough*Alternative World*cough*Shin Tenchi*cough* Unheard of! ^_~
Actually, I considered Battle Athletes to be an exception to the rule, in that there seems to be a greatr number of people who prefer the TV version to the OVA. At the moment I may not have seen enough of the TV series to make a solid judgement- but I generally like longer series. I particularly like filler episodes: though cursed by the majority of fandom, to me they give the characters a chance to come into their own, unburdened by plot constraints (pretty much all of my favourite Slayers episodes had little to do with the plot). I also like the fact that BAV has more characters, one of whom has blatant yuri potential. If I ever write my Battle Athletes fanfic, it will almost certainly be in the TV continuity...

Non-El-Hazard Topical Discussions / Battle Athletes-nya

Well, after Spanner expressed surprise that I hadn't seen Battle Athletes, I somehow felt that my credentials as a connoisseur of the yuri arts were under threat. So, one bulk purchase later...

I'm some way into both continuities of the series. The yuri is, well, refreshingly obvious. Kris is definitely the sort of person I'd want around if I was a cute anime girl (if you can imagine that for a moment). Tanya is just adorable and will probably end up as my favourite character, but the character who's made the most impact so far is Anna, whose plight is utterly tragic in both versions, either a victim of bad parenting or extremely bad parenting. She is, without a doubt, the character in greatest need of a hug.

Incidentally, I'm a little uncomfortable with the way Anna's OVA plot twist was revealed. It seemed to be played entirely for laughs when it was in fact an incident that would probably scar the girl for life and totally estrange her from her mother (not that it would necessarily be a bad thing, but still...). Given the similarities between that scene and certain scenes from the El-Hazard OVAs, I'm tempted to conjecture that this was Hiroki Hayashi up to his old tricks again.

Well, that gripe aside, I think the only other element preventing me from fully enjoying the series is Mylandah, who really needs a kick in the head. And if she gets one, I'm not convinced it'll be hard enough. I know you're not supposed to like her, but her very presence worries me, like living next door to an axe murderer...

Anyway, the series has surpassed Sailor Moon as "series most likely to get the fanfic treatment next time I can build up the energy". In fact, I'm having to repress the urge to start writing stuff before I've seen the whole series. How about "Anna and Elaine go on the run from their insane mother who's trying to inject them with oestrogen"? (You may laugh, but my actual idea is frighteningly similar to this... ^_~)

One more thing...

Woong-a-ji ownz your ass.

Non-El-Hazard Topical Discussions / Re: The big Map

Heheh... "The World According to America" reminds me of "The Conservative Party Map of the World" from one of the Spitting Image books back in the eighties... which had the Falkland Islands taking up most of the South Atlantic, Denmark labeled as "Porno Land" and Austria labeled as "Foreign But Can Ski in it".

Incidentally I'm also in the UK ^_^ Couldn't the British amonst us have our own little map?

Actually, I was a little surprised that Battle Athletes wasn't on the list, seeing as how it's considered by many to be a virtual hotbed of lesbian subtext. ^^;

So I've heard... it's one of those series I've always meant to watch but never got round to. Similarly Utena isn't on the list either... it probably would be if I had the time to watch it.

And, it has a catgirl. Of sorts.

Oh, well... I think that settles it ^_^

And going back to my catgirl comment, closer examination of my list reveals that four of the series do have catgirls (Nuku Nuku, Miyuki-chan, Asagiri no Miko and Sailor Moon) and two have almost-catgirls (Guu and Yuna). Interesting though that Miyuki-chan is the only series to combine my favourite elements in a single character...

Non-El-Hazard Topical Discussions / Re: Seiken Densetsu 3?
« on: May 14, 2004, 04:45:36 am »
At the moment I'm playing with the all-female team (Riesz, Angela and Charlotte) with Riesz as the main character. I'm very much amused by Charlotte though ^_^ Currently levelling up like mad due to the prospect of facing two bosses one after the other.

It does seem strange that there was never a translation of this game, considering that everyone who's heard of it thinks very highly of it. Still, I'm quite happy for now with my translated version.

Non-El-Hazard Topical Discussions / Seiken Densetsu 3?
« on: May 13, 2004, 10:15:45 am »
Considering the number of gamers on this forum, I'm wondering if anybody's heard of this. I'm not generally an RPG fan, but I've just acquired a SNES emulator and I'm enjoying this game hugely. Apparently it's another fan-translated venture that never got a US or European release. Anyone else played it?

It's also just occurred to me that of my ten choices, four have yuri as a major theme, and eight have openly lesbian characters ^_^ Interestingly, not many catgirls though. (My two primary obsessions in anime...)

Well, I might as well add to this list...

10. All-Purpose Cultural Catgirl Nuku Nuku
9. Miyuki-chan in Wonderland
8. Maria-sama ga Miteru
7. Steel Angel Kurumi 2
6. Galaxy Fraulein Yuna
5. Asagiri no Miko
4. Azumanga Daioh
3. Sailor Moon
2. Jungle wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu
1. El-Hazard

Although to be honest, the permanent presence of EH at number one is starting to feel like a nominal position... there hasn't been any new EH in so long, and I've seen it so many times, that right now I'll probably get more pleasure out of Guu or Sailor Moon...

Nah... lots of public high schools have uniforms- the schools in Azumanga and Sailor Stars, to name but two.

I was more curious on the fact that, that is 256 color. It seems like you have a lot of color and the colors I tried to use and what not just didnt work out that nicely. ...

There are different methods of reducing the colours, at least in Paint Shop: I think it's something like Windows safe, Optimised Octree and Median Cut. I use the last two (Windows safe gives you horrible results), but I'm not sure which is the 'correct' method to use for this sort of thing. I think both of them probably only use about 20 colours in total, actually.

Oh arent the thing on Shayla's shoulders like a silvery blue color? Maybe not...

Could be: I'm using the OVA1 outfit though. I think they might light up blue when she powers up... Meh, I've not watched any El-Hazard for months ^_^ Incidentally, your sprites look nice too... I guess you have to build them up pixel by pixel, right?
Anyway, thanks for your comments. Maybe I'll try to do another character tonight.

Actually, if someone made the sprites (the official tech name for the little on-screen graphics of characters and objects, FYI) I might be willing to try to whip you up the engine just arbitrarily.

Just a few things I whipped up in Paintshop last night...

Wow, it's been so long since I've done anything El-Hazard related...

The smaller ones correspond roughly to Pocket Fighter scale, I think. I used a new method to colour them, creating a semi-transpartent layer over a pencil drawing then painting over the top. Then I reduced it to 256 colours and shrank it down. I'm quite pleased with Nanami, although Shayla might need a bit of work...

I don't mean to attract attention away from the RPG project, but since I'm considering working away on these sprites in the background for a bit, does anyone have any more suggestions?

Hmm... do you know of a method for doing such drawings- ie, is there any specific program for pixel art, or is it just a case Paintshopping on a tiny scale? I'd love to participate in the making of such a game, and given enough time and pracitice I could probably come up with some non-sucky character art. Any idea what scale would be required (eg height in pixels, etc)?

dooky, momentarity compelled to initiate another improbable project...

I'm sure Fatora could have some sort of ability that would make her useful (or at the very least, something other than a liability). She's quite adept at abusing her position to threaten people, so perhaps if you wanted to terrify some poor local into giving you free stuff... ^_^ And surely, there must be some use for her legendary seduction skillz...

(Don't mean to intrude, just doing my bit for the Fatora camp...)

A bit OT, but something I always thought would be great is an El-Hazard fighting game. Not exactly in the SFII sense, more in the Pocket Fighter way of things. (If you don't know PF, it's basically a chibi croosver of SFII and Darkstalkers, with bizarre comedy attacks and transformations) Somebody's already making an Azumanga equivalent of PF, and I've always wondered what an El-Hazard version would be like. Power levels wouldn't necessarily matter that much since the attacks are so silly (you'd have your standard attacks alongside the stupider variety), and even the art would be relatively straghtforward, since PF itself is quite simplistic and 2D. So if any of you programmers are looking for a new EH game project in the future... ^_^ well, that would get my vote...

Interesting project, Jojo...

But what of Fatora? Admittedly if you're just recapping the first OVA then her part's going to be minimal, but if you go past that, it'd be good to have her as a playable character at some point...
