El-Hazard Online / Site layout
« on: May 07, 2003, 07:41:29 pm »
Heh.  I'm never satisfied.  So many websites seem prettier and more functional then my own.  :P

For Neil's sanity I would definitely abstain from TOTAL site rehashes like I had to some months ago... but I think I shouldn't fear using frames.  I didn't for this supposed compatability issue with browers that I've never seen except on the text browser Lynx (which the supersceder "Links" DOES support them, amazing for a text browser.)  However frames do seem to make for a nice control panel.

Bah, just wondering if any of you have input on this... reorganizing sections, additional functionality up top (the only actual frame used on the page, and an optional one at that)...  I'm not one akin with web design... I'm just a geek.  So I can implement just about anything (except for PHP which I should really learn since I believe my server will support it as-is) which would explain how a YaBB has come to have background table textures.

Read latest post for a possible ADDITIONAL spammer...

I just wanted to all alert you that I've been spammed twice from a mailbot that goes by the name of "Mike", and has an email return address of "mike[randomnumber]@hotmail.com"

The exact letter is as follows:

Quote
Hey there.. ^_^

Just saw you on some forums, and thought I would email you. Basically I own a message board for anime, roleplay and entertainment with about 1500 members, and would like to invite you to them. :P We are a friendly place (though a little crazy) with plans of world domination (was I meant to say that? er..heh heh ^^). Anyway, if you want to check it out, the link is:

http://www.animeleague.net/cgi-bin/phpbb/index.php

Hope to see ya around. :)

It sounds friendly, but like I said, this is a mailbot, a spammer.  The board itself is pretty much as it says, however El-Hazard comes up under only a handful of topics, one of which was "Worst Animes Ever".  The server its on seems paralyzed with bandwidth overload... and they really don't need additional members, nor do many of the ones on there seem even remotely mature (probably a bunch of 12-14 year old males, bleh).  One of the topics that El-Hazard WAS in asked so many incredibly sad questions (why wuz makoto cross-drssing?!! what's up with that little girl?!?!)

Anyway, I don't know if any of you are members there, but I recommend you DON'T add to their 1500+.  :P

El-Hazard Online / Kaurooawool *shot*
« on: May 05, 2003, 10:23:37 pm »

Alternative World Memories, the only book I know to have any Alternative World detication, depicts Qawool in this particular dress (page 13), which is obviously in the style of people from Cretaria (sp?).

Now, granted I can't read a syllable of Japanese, but I'm wondering if that page is supposed to be trying to describe something about Qawool's origin or at least suggest theory.  (Most interesting because of this supposed OAV3 that I've heard about from Saucer a few times.)

Also on the topic of this book, my sister read Allujah's name in the Katakana form printed in the book as

"Ah-ru-jhee-ah"

Now, she'll hate me for posting that because she's understandably not 100% confident in her reading skills which are, as of yet, far from proficient by any means.

However, if that pronounciation is correct, then I am also correct in realizing where the English pronounciation "Allujah" came from.  That would mean the "Arjah" thing is just a misprint from someone not quite qualified in the AIC departments who should've at least taken it to "Arujiah" or "Arujah".  (And the 'R' / 'L' problem of Japanese obviously makes up for the double-L spelling!)

Now, of course that little bit of nitpicking is moot unless this is verified, but at least then I'll be 100% positive that "Allujah" is a "correct" English reference backed up with proof of sorts.  ;p

El-Hazard Online / MegaHAL's best
« on: April 28, 2003, 10:13:56 pm »
If you don't know, there's this CGI script I wrote some time back that selects a random picture from my screenshot collection and applies pseudo-AI via MegaHAL (an opensource attempt at a conversation bot) as a comic text bubble.  (Okay, CGI is only the control, but it actually executes my custom written software on the server to do this :P)

The CGI improved into what I dubbed v1.1 later with more options and eventually a better font.

Here's some random examples from it's generation.  As Saucer said, "Hours of fun."

These are generally in chronological order, so more features come in as we go:

Allujah forgets it's called The Eye of God

Marriage has ruined him.

"The Face"

Neil got too excited dealing with Alielle

You better do as he says

I'm in trouble

Shayla is unsure how to respond

Diva's first day driving

Jinnai sticks it to Diva

Rune's chest size is officialized

"Jinnai knows when he's being humoured by Harpo."

Bugrom on right: "Can you translate that?"

Jinnai gets ahead of the script

Fujisawa: "Is this a bad time?"

Jinnai's title for Wanderers episode 1

Don't you hate it when that happens?

The Narrator speaks the obvious

Spinning around means so much to Jinnai

Follow up on MrWhat's eBay story

Diva invents, and ends, the internet

Fatora cowers guiltily in Rune's presense

Jinnai, for the lady fans

Don't you hate being faced with these choices?

Jinnai so pampers Kalia

Makoto's a little slow-witted

I hear the side effects are rough

Right about now, v1.1 pre-font came into play.  (Mainly the multi-panel format that's used sometimes)

Nanami asks the more important question!

Whipped Jinnai.  I guess

The robot later quit and went to another anime series

One of them is a lesbian

Ura explains

Jinnai's cool with you

... then something really bad must result?

Fujisawa's the only one that does

You need to SUPPORT the Eye of God!

Makoto: "I am NOT doing this story."

This spared Nanami some

Everyone's reactions to the car

Fujisawa's about to thwack Makoto good

For some reason, "Journal" just isn't that threatening

You are now in the middle of something um "special"

We need to check our viewers

Ura doesn't hold back

Latest: New font

Better run Nanami

Fujisawa's got you there

She's about to give

Please stop looking

Interpret "purification" as you will

Too accurate

El-Hazard Online / I thought I might as well share this strangeness..
« on: April 27, 2003, 10:50:15 pm »
Last night, I happened to have this El-Hazard dream (among some others including a "The Far Side" live action TV show, but anyway ;p)...

Basically, in full brain-rendered animation, some plot unfolds where this child starts bothering Shayla about this or that while she's trying to do something priestly-duty like.  Eventually Shayla loses her nerve and tells the kid to scram.

Afura later confronts Shayla.  It turns out that Afura had hired the child as part of some sort of priestess checkup.  Basically it was something to the effect of Shayla obviously didn't show care for others like she's supposed to under some policy and therefore failed this checkup.

The punishment consisted of the young child running back and whacking Shayla in the head 4 times with a crowbar.  o_O;;  A distinctive pattern of twice on top and twice on the each side.  Then something was tied around her forehead and her now unconcious body was tossed into a nearby pool of water.

It ended around a point where Shayla regained conciousness at some point (luckily her body had floated) and she was now on some rage-induced Afura vengence bit, flying around like someone out of DBZ...

El-Hazard Online / Ooh, really old news update found...
« on: April 21, 2003, 10:45:14 pm »
http://www.el-hazardonline.net/El-Hazard/site/updates.htm

This was laying around for some reason.  The current news script just "forgets" after about 20 posts or so.  This file predates the news script though... so that explains how it's retained.  It doesn't explain why it's there.  Anyway, now we know exactly when to have an anniversary... (Neil's post, May 28th!)

Speaking of old stuff, does anyone remember when the page looked like this? ;)  Save for me, Neil, my brother, and my sister... I'll bet not.  I think most of them filtered off.
Errr... and take my old articles that still work on the old page with a grain of salt; they were quite the EH newbieisms.    :-[  (Why some stuff never gets deleted... nobody knows...)

El-Hazard Online / Boxset ... for $1

It's ... $1.  The $100-some boxset.  For $1.  (At least current bid price at this point.)  Not even a reserve bid.  Granted you have to pay only by check, but... this person must not have any sense of its list price.

EDIT: Keep bumping my old posts with invalid pic URLs.  ;D

El-Hazard Online / Avatar Censor Option
« on: April 10, 2003, 01:58:51 pm »
As some of you probably have noticed, member "kiddo" likes the hentai.  :P

I know some of us would be sensitive to have a half naked Nanami glaring at us every post... and some of us wouldn't.  (I personally don't care.)

Now it's up to you.  I hacked in an option to your Profile to allow disabling of such images.  If you don't explicitedly check the box allowing yourself to see them, they'll be masked by:

The only thing I'm going to enforce on this is that if you DO use an image that may cause someone to twitch, you better check the box right below the avatar URL specifying the image to have adult content.  If you don't, an admin will.

That is all...

El-Hazard Online / Admin Speak: Those MP3 bastards
« on: April 04, 2003, 12:54:57 am »
I have 166 members registered.  I haven't gone through yet, but I'll bet maybe only about 34 are actually active, and we know only about 6 even check here for posting.  (The number 34 is in my head, might as well use it.)

I have those lousy MP3's.  I'll bet anything that 60-75% of the registrant's registered solely because they wanted MP3's.  MP3's are my biggest amount of bandwidth usage on my very limited speed hosting.

I only keep them around because I know that they're out-of-print material, and I like to host out-of-print material.

I was hoping registering would deter leechers... but it only seemed to make them more apparent.

Here's what I think -- effective as soon as I get around to altering the script (could be as soon as tommorow), MP3's will NOT be able to be downloaded by ANYone until they contribute something to the site for the greater good.  Fanfiction, episode summary, SOMETHING.  Even possibly [useful] contribution to other projects I work on.  Anything that makes me say "There's someone who deserves the executive key."  I'm not asking for a lot.

Personally because I find it insulting people come here for one resource, purge it, then leave.

What I can't believe is that leechers actually often even answer honestly on the register html.  You'd THINK that they'd have enough guilt to lie.

From the database:
Quote

The newly registered [removed] ([removed]@[removed].com)...
... is an anime fan.
... wants to know more or everything about El-Hazard.
... likes/loves/worships El-Hazard.
... plans to rudely leech our MP3's and leave.
... plans to leech everything else besides MP3's and leave.

... plans to visit only to leech.
... doesn't need a forum.

Also, on the over-register count, I think it's going to be time for "spring cleaning".  This isn't final, but here's how I'm thinking: Any account that hasn't been used in over a month gets an email sent to the registered address warning of the inactivity.  If no response is heard in that month, or the response is negative immediately, the account will be deleted.

166 looks good on paper, but it's no good to lie.

El-Hazard Online / The Wanderers The Adventure Begins Episode 1(more)
« on: March 27, 2003, 11:44:00 pm »
Now head down to my latest post for more description goodness for many of the episodes between 3-26!

[Taken from an eBay description for Wanderers Episode 1 and 2]

The Adventure Begins Episode 1: Drawn Into the Land of Adventures One quiet autumn day, the Shinonome high-school students are busy preparing for their school festival. Mr. Fujisawa, a hard core rock climbing fanatic is inspecting the school grounds; the business savvy and Nanami is selling box lunches; Jinnai and the president of the school council is caught up in an unscrupulous scandal; and finally Makoto is completely immersed in inventing a device about which he hasn't got a clue. This incident occurs when this peaceful day is almost over. Jinnai who's just insulted Makoto, has caused his invention to operate recklessly. The machine roars and throws Makoto and the others into another world. What will Makoto, Jinnai, Mr. Fujisawa, and Nanami destinies be in this magnificent world?

Episode 2: Exploring the Kingdom of Mystery Makoto whos been thrown into another world, comes upon Mr. Fujisawa who has landed nearby. The two are bewildered because they have no sense of place or time. However, theyre invited to the royal palace by a girl they've rescued from the Bugrom insect Tribe. She is Rune Venus, the Princess of the Roshtoria Kingdom. They are treated as guests until Mr. Fujisawa begins to display unusual powers that arouse suspicion. As the night wears slowly away in this new world, theyre unable to figure out how to return to their former world.

What we've learned:

* The Spring Festival is happening in Autumn

* Fujisawa is some random rock climber who wanders the school grounds

* "the business savvy" AND Nanami are working together to sell box lunches

* Jinnai AND "the president of the school council" are both caught up in a scandal

* Makoto's just throwing stuff together to create some invention that he hasn't got a clue about

* Jinnai insults Makoto! *gasp*

* Makoto's machine, while normally calm, decides to operate recklessly

* [Makoto and Fujisawa] "are bewildered because they have no sense of place or time."  (Wow, that has to suck)
