The best character in El-Hazard--any of them--has to be Fujisawa for the sheer irony of his power and the way he can be heroic one minute and an utter louse the next. He's a man of extremes--great enthusiasm, great strengths, and great weaknesses. I hold a special place in my heart for Afura, though, because lord knows it's not easy being the straight man in a band of comedians.  JSM

Yeah, Rakka is an Egyptian Mao.... I think. Right Morris?  To be honest, we're not sure. She's got definite tabby markings up front, but your guess is as good as ours. She's settling in quite nicely, though. Takes no guff from the other animals and is very loving. JSM

Meh. I never had a cat, so I guessed I'm not really paying attention.  Personally, I always thought of them as more territorial animals, not real friendly, sociable animals like dogs or guinea pigs. Ha. You obviously have not been "gratitude attacked" by a cat in the dead of night, consisting of nosing your hand until it is in prime petting position, going back and forth, leaning into said hand so you can note how soft and silky the fur is, granting the Holy Gift of Nose Kiss on one's face, and climaxed by shaking one's head so that the accumulated drool of the attack goes flying in every direction. I get this almost every night from our eldest cat Misato.  There's also the alternative of waking up to find a kitten sound asleep and/or purring happy while stretched out across your neck, as my daughter experienced this morning with Rakka. This was okay. It was when Rakka sneezed all over Shelby's face that my daughter questioned the wisdom of permitting such actions. JSM

Well, here. Have some good kitty news for a change. We just adopted a two-month old kitten that had been abandoned on hospital parking lot. Someone brought her to our vet, who asked if we'd be interested. Having two cats and a dog already, of course we said yes. It has been a very up-and-down year. The first half was horrible, as my wife's nursing agency couldn't get her any hours (when the economy is bad, hospital censuses drop and agency nurses don't get hours). Our bills piled up horribly, our van died with only four payments left, and two of our cats died within a month of each other. Since June, though, my wife has a fantastic job that draws upon her nursing expertise but isn't actually nursing. And the pay is great. We're getting our bills back in order as a result. I'm enjoying the work I'm doing (most of the time...) and my daughter is having a great time in sixth grade. We got Saki the Wonder Kitten in July...and yesterday we adopted a foundling that had been left on a hospital parking lot and brought to our local vet's office. Her name is Rakka (from "Haibane Renmei') and she is a very shy, very cuddly little gal. http://members.aol.com/jsmarchive2/rakka2.jpgWriting wise--I hit a bad slump midyear, but I'm slowly coming out of it. I just don't have that much time any more to do anything, and when I do have time, I'm too tired. Actually, it's "too lazy", but "too tired" sounds better. And I found this place. My wife spotted this over on the AIC web page. There's a special "memo" page that's not generally known about unless you know where to look (at the bottom of the main page), where the webmaster talks about this and that. The memo that was just posted notes that "Omae", Hayashi Hiroki's cat and the model for "Ura" on El-Hazard, passed away on November 22 at the age of 12. I try not to think about how much money I've spent the last two years on anime, manga and related items. It's much safer on my sanity that way. There was a T-shirt at Archon this year that read: Anime--Drugs Would Be CheaperTo which we all say "Amen". JSM

I'm mentioning this in case anyone's interested. Someone must either be printing these from his home or he lucked into a warehouse collection, because there's a volume of the El-Hazard OAV art book available on eBay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3255513903&category=1345The reason I'm scratching my head is that I saw this up for bid two nights ago and waited a bit too long to bid on it. This morning I went out again and behold, the guy had a second copy up for bid--this one I bought via "pay it now" for $15. (Given how hard it's been to get the other EH art books, to say nothing of the Tenchi Muyo OAV art books, I considered this a steal). And now the guy's got a THIRD copy up for bidding. JSM

Hmmm.
If'n it were me doing the writing for a third OAV, the first thing I would do is set it a few years ahead and have Ifurita present. I always thought Alternative World was such a cheat, having her in the opening credits but she shows up for maybe, what five seconds in the series?
Getting past the "quest for Ifurita" would resolve several situations--Makoto's made his choice (shades of Tenchi...), Nanami, Shayla and Qawoor will have to accept that and move on, and so on. Of course, you'd have to have a new quest to replace it with.
El-Hazard is a big world, yet we've seen only a fraction of it. I'd like a "road" story of sorts; Fujisawa, much as he probably loves fatherhood, is itchy to do something manly and physically demanding. Nanami might still be trying to figure out what her place in things is, seeing as Makoto is pretty much out of the picture. I think the change in group dynamics regarding the three priestesses might be a bit intense; Afura's borderline arrogance against Shayla's temper and take-charge attitude would certainly cause sparks to fly, and with Qawoor being such a wuss mouse, the third part of the equation isn't there to balance things.
How about this--Rune's received an invitation from another prince to meet and possibly develop a matrimony-based alliance. This would serve as a good wake-up call for Fatora, that it's time to shape up and grow up because Big Sister might not always be around to handle everything. Along the way Rune and her entourage vanish, and it's up to Team Makoto to find her.
And along the way you put Jinnai in there as a reluctant ally against whatever menace there might be...you might have something worthy of a six-episode OAV.
Just my thoughts.

You know, as much as I'd dearly love to see a translation of Afura's song Kashimashi Shugyou...I'm hesitant. I've recently become a big fan of Yuki Kajiura's works...NOIR, .hack//SIGN, and others. And I really do enjoy listening to the songs at work, especially "Aka to kuro" from the NOIR blanc dans NOIR album. It's really fast-paced and catchy. And then one day I found the English translation to the lyrics. Enter "WTF?" phase. But I've enjoyed Afura's song so much since I got it (and the album) at ACEN two years ago...so I'll be looking forward to seeing it when it gets posted. JSM

I believe I did come across this once. It's pretty excellent for what it is. And of course there's a story behind it. I was on another message board about a year ago and somehow the discussion hit on crossing anime and non-anime shows. For whatever reason I hit on "The Roshtarian West Wing" and in the course of events CJ mentioned that Fatora wanted to sponsor an institute of higher learning for the poor. Toby immediately muttered something about "Princess Fatora's School For Gifted Young Women..." and at some point I got very bored, pulled out the art books, and cobbled that page together. JSM
