We all know this story...

It's almost become something like a recipe of sorts...

Step 1 - Find a story with a huge fanbase.

Step 2 - Hire a producer and have him develop the movie.

Step 3 - Hear all the fans of the books tell them that they are doing it all wrong because it is NOTHING like what the original guy wrote it (and there are very few exceptions to the rule, with Lord of the Rings trilogy being one of them)

Step 4 - Read the reviews of the movie hearing how the reviewer said it is not as good as the book.

Step 5 - The movie still makes some money at the box office.

Now, I have not read the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy at all, but its on my To Do list (which includes, among other things, getting out of college and getting a decent job with good pay).  And chances are that my experiences with the book would be nothing like the movie would portray it.

That's the beauty of a book - the reader is both producer and design manager.  They can decide what each person looks like, how each person talks, how each person perceives how the character feels about other characters.

The problem with movies is that it is very untangible.  It is done with one person's perspective, with one person's idea for the people in the book.  It's very difficult (but definitly not IMpossible) to do and very hard to convince others that it was made with what the original author's thought of how each person should look (especially since he is gone...).

But with the extensive works before this movie...

- all three of his books being on the NY Times bestseller's list and Publisher's Weekly bestseller list

- with a radio show in 1979

- a TV series in 1981 (won Best TV Graphics, Best VTR Editing, and Best Sound)

- a Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Video game (?!) in 1985 (which also won an award)

...and the unabridged audio books (that apparenty Douglas Adams read himself) that won an award, and a "Making of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" video in 1993 that won an award, AND the fact that his book was 24th on the Waterstone's Books/Channel Four list (??) of the 100 Greatest Books of the Century, we all knew it was going to happen sooner or later that someone would say, "Hey!  Making a movie after this guy's work might be a good idea!"

Then the vicious cycle begins.

Saucer : "OK so who's Myuun again? Yet another demon-god, exclusive to the radio drama?"

Uhh... technically not.

She is the vengeful spirit from the war that was taken place about 20,000 years before Makoto and the others arrived at El-Hazard.  Myuun wanted to destroy the machine that was keeping the planet alive, and thus had to be stopped.  Mind you, she possesses Fujisawa for his strength to break the machine (you read it right).  If I remember what happens, Fujisawa gets torn up pretty good because of her relentless charge to the machine despite the machinery trying to stop her (or him...).

Because of the possession technique used, Fujisawa is still there, just not in control.  So, he gets used as a shield for her deeds.  Fujisawa would have willingly sacrificed himself to stop her, but Makoto, of course, stops Myuun before she can finish her plan via connecting to the machine.

Err.

From what I remembered.

Minish Robert : "AFAIK Myuun is the one with the "boob protector" (to quote my sister) that is displayed across these two pages from the Radio Drama's booklet"

Wait!  I thought that was Salia, yet another person from the Radio drama only.

Mind as well explain her...

She is the one that was protecting the machine from Myuun.  Salia's plan was to kill Fujisawa when she found out that Myuun has possessed Fujisawa.

About this image...

http://www.el-hazardonline.net/artbooks/anthology/page002.jpg

I believe that it is supposed to be Ifurita, Myuun and Ifurina.  Considering the print on the book (1996 September 28), it is plenty possible that this image was meant to represent the Radio Drama (or at least the conceptual art of what Myuun) would have looked like.

...

Yeah, the Radio Drama is a confuzzling topic.

(Damn code...)

------

Gotta mention this...

For a quick comparison.

The radio darma lasted until 1996 July 5.

The El-Hazard Anthology was printed in 1996 September 28.

Well, I know something about this drama...

From what I can tell from it, it is supposed to be more humorous than the other one.

There is supposed to be a story where Alielle and Fatora go out with their lesbian escapades and Makoto is supposed to be after them... with disasterous results (they were not caught).

And there is another one with the Jinnai making food from Bugrom larvae (I'm not kidding) and the "Mouth of God" (whom if fed with the most delicious food will become a weapon for the person) and denies Jinnai's food and persues him to make him the greatest chef of all...

...

Or something like that.

In any case, its supposed to be a humorous thing to listen to (assuming you UNDERSTAND what is being said).

And actually it was a shame... Bob and I DID see this on eBay, but it ended rather melodramatically.

We forgot about it.

Oh, well... life goes on...

I will admit, your idea is interesting... but this also requires plenty of coordination.

The offical first time the OAV was shown to Japan was May 26, 1995.  This means...

(does calculations...)

There's about 8 months before it is offically 10 years ago that the OAV (and thus El-Hazard) was born.

I personally think the person should get a "passable" grade (at least 85% or 17 questions right).

Well, I always thought computers had some sort of feeling.

--- (insert sounding like a crazy man here)

I mean, a computer, especially a machine designed to play games, has to be a depressing notion.  It would not like being alone in a closet collecting dust while one plays new-fangled systems.

And even if they are in use, they can be very angry.  I mean, if you think about a computer in a racing game, what does it get if one gets first place?  It gets second, and third and fourth... up to whatever last place is.  Even if it does get first (Heaven forbid!), it is still upset because one did not get last place.

I always thought it would be nice to give the computer all the places except last once in a while to make it feel better.

And Food Fight!  The computer has a beautiful strategy of slamming you with as much food as possible!  How does it feel to see you succeed in avoiding its food that it has thrown at one!

The RPG is also an eternal struggle for the machines.  It has to face the foe of you all the time!  It keeps trying over and over again to defeat you.  Imagine how happy it is that it finally gets one's characters in the agony of defeat.  It must be estatic!

--- (quit sounding like a crazy man here)

Well computers are strange indeed.  You would be amazed what people would write.

Heh.

Considering this seems to have been off topic for a bit, but I don't mind it.  I have played too many games for my own good.

---

For instance, I just got finished with a two-day goof around with the three Mario Kart games.

The Original (1992) - I always remembered having trouble with this game, and now I know why...

Mario and Luigi are to blame!

They had those invincibilities they can just turn on and off as they pleased.  It was definitely an annoyance.  Otherwise, it was impressive for a 1992 game.

The N64 version (1996) - Despite the fact the game had updated graphics and bigger courses, I thought the challenge was a bit lacking.  The mistakes cost me more than the drivers.  It just seemed less fun because it seemed that sheer stupidity cost me the wins and not the CPU.

The Gamecube version (2003) - Now the Gamecube game was something.  This was actually a lot of fun... and it was rather hilarious (watching the rear character yell as they hung on to their dear life as they were flung into the air was great).  And the computer actually got challenging after 100cc.  At 150, the gloves come off, and it usually became a fight to keep first place.

In fact, one time, they hit me with a thunderbolt, forced me off the edge, then slammed me with a spiny shell just to spite me... and I still got first!

Another time, I think was hit four times with spiny shells.  I didn't get first in that race, but on this mode, it was a hell of a time keeping the higher place.

Retaliation usually came in a bomb form for me.  Throwing the Bob-bombs at the opponents and watching them fly in the air was gratifying.

---

On Final Fantasy, I really cannot say much about it.  I liked VII, but that was it.  I have tried to like them, I really have... but I kept turning off them.  I guess I just have a problem with the series... it just kept running together and the story was rather slow in advance (being FORCED to fighting monsters is not fun).

And MMORPGs are no fun for me either.  I tried those once, and I sort of backed off after a month.  I just can't stand the idea that I would have to spend two hours at the very least just to gain one little level.  It was insane, and too time consuming.

But Chrono Trigger was always good - it could be because  the game was based around a time traveling plot (and I always have been a sucker for these types of games).

And Mario and Luigi : Superstar Saga is the best RPG game I have played in a while.  It was fun and funny.  Period.

---

Simple games are almost always a blast.  Take a little idea and building a game.  Food Fight was always good for some fun (maybe it was just throwing the food around and watching it splat against the chef was good fun).

---

But I digress.

To have:

- something funny and...
- with a decent plot and...
- good graphics to match and...
- not forcing the person to go into pointless battling for hours at a time...

...is the best way to go when making an RPG game.

So when the RPG for El-Hazard gets going again, remember that.

Absolutely, but Bob is currently at work.  When he gets home, he will make the decision.

Personally, I would not mind.

Shinonome High was shown for only about 15 minutes in the OVA and then it was gone.  Just get as close as possible.  Besides, there is no known "blueprint" of the campus.

About the dorms, I know that Edinboro University had Male and Female dormatories and 1 Co-ed dormatory, that's it.  So, perhaps one dorm would be Co-ed, and the rest would be single gender.

I think your main problem is that Shinonome school does not have a tiled roof.  Its tops are relatively flat, except for a few of the rooftop equipment.

http://www.el-hazardonline-dl2.net/screenshots/images_1/161.jpg

Note how the rooftop looks.

http://www.el-hazardonline-dl2.net/screenshots/images_1/052.jpg

The dormatories seem to have the slanted rooftop, but that's about it.

http://www.el-hazardonline-dl2.net/screenshots/images_1/010.jpg

This is the front door.  Notice how they are relatively large.

You may want to work on a closer perspective than you are currently working on.

Dooky - "Hmm... do you know of a method for doing such drawings- ie, is there any specific program for pixel art, or is it just a case Paintshopping on a tiny scale? I'd love to participate in the making of such a game, and given enough time and pracitice I could probably come up with some non-sucky character art. Any idea what scale would be required (eg height in pixels, etc)?"

Like I said, there is a good possibility of this happening, but it will take time.

If you want to get a good program for pixal art... it may seem kind of odd, but an old DOS program "Deluxe Paint" may help.  It uses an extremely low resolution and allows the person to edit on a small scale.  Of course, this is also good if palettes are going to be used.  You may end up just using a program like Photoshop.  As for scaling requirements, I do not know.  It depends on if you want the characters to be all the same size or different.

Of course we have been thinking about such an idea, Dooky.  A fighting game would be great.  We just need other things to be wrapped up before we go ahead with other projects such as that.
