Non-El-Hazard Topical Discussions / Re: Merry Christmas!

Happy Holidays!  Christmas went well for me, and the heavy snowfall is a splendid sight after worrying for so long about how much of a white Christmas I'd be celebrating.

Season's Greetings,

Happy Holidays, everyone.  I hope the holiday season goes well for all of you.

2004 List:
1. El-Hazard
2. Tenchi (including Magical Project S)
3. Slayers
4. Shingetsutan Tsukihime
5. Noir
6. Revolutionary Girl Utena
7. Kare Kano
8. Inu-Yasha
9. Ruroni Kenshin
10. Sailor Moon

2005 List
1. El-Hazard (tentatively)
2. Tenchi (including Magical Project S but not the two new series that I haven't seen yet)
3. Slayers
4. Revolutionary Girl Utena
5. Monster
6. Ruroni Kenshin (Seasons 1-2 and the 3 OAV episodes.  I haven't watched the rest)
7. Noir
8. The Big O
9. Vision of Escaflowne
10. Sailor Moon

El-Hazard, Tenchi, and Slayers retain their positions because, even though I haven't watched them in a while, they're the three series I remember viewing and enjoying the most when I was a younger anime fan.  They've generated a lot of good memories.

Revolutionary Girl Utena moves up because I've had more time to appreciate the subtlety and intricacies of the story and let the complexity of the characters and series soak in a bit more.

Monster is awesome.  I've only watched up to episode 30 or so, but I haven't seen an anime quite like this one before.  It has a dark, unique feel to it and compelling characters.

Ruroni Kenshin's Kyoto Arc and the OAV episodes are works of art, and the first season is good and does a reasonable job of introducing the characters.  I've heard somewhat negative comments about the rest of the series, though.

Kare Kano and Inu-Yasha were removed because I still haven't seen the entirety of either series and other productions have caught my attention.  Shingetsutan Tsukihime remains a favorite of mine, but I'm not quite sure that I'd place it in my top 10 anymore.

Noir exudes coolness and edge, and The Big O II builds upon the set-up of its first season and rises to a glorious climax.  I'm also a sap for the RogerxDorothy relationship.

An admirable combination of fantasy and mecha, The Vision of Escaflowne is a lovely series with interesting characters, surprises, and an ending that didn't leave me desperately longing for closure.

As for Sailor Moon, it was my anime "gateway drug" and is, arguably, an anime archetype.  To this day and despite several criticisms, it retains a fond spot in my memories.

Gankutsuoh (a futuristic retelling of "The Count of Monte Cristo") is also up there and may or may not belong on my fluctuating top 10 list, and what I've seen so far of the stylish "Samurai 7" leads me to believe it could usurp a rank.

Thanks for the recommendations, everyone.  I'm downloading the first three episodes of "Macross Zero" now and will probably show all 5 OAV episodes to start the semester off.  "'Bleach" and "Tsubasa Chronicle" look like shoo-ins at this point, and I plan on looking at "Mai-HIME", "Pita Ten", and possibly "Yakitate!! Japan" for the other two slots.  If one or more of these series proves to be unpopular with the club, 4chan and iichan seem like good places to seek replacements.

Non-El-Hazard Topical Discussions / How does one find good anime series?
« on: August 27, 2005, 03:32:21 pm »
Well, due to various circumstances, I am the current president of my college's anime club.  Due to the same circumstances, most of the regulars from last year graduated, and since I'm somewhat inexperienced when it comes to finding good anime that hasn't been licensed in the States yet I'm having difficulty figuring out what to show this semester.  I've heard and seen good things about "Bleach" and "Tsubasa Chronicle", but does anyone have any recommendations in case those two series don't go over well?  Perhaps more useful, does anyone have any tips for finding good anime?  I suspect that looking for series that are popular in bit torrents and then crosschecking them at AnimeNfo is a good place to start.  Am I completely wrong about this?  Any help any of you offer would be appreciated.

Take care,
Rowan Seven -- *worrying about his new responsibilities*

While a few more clothes might be nice *coughs*, that's a lovely drawing.  I'm particularly impresssed by how well-proportioned everything is, especially the head and hands.  You have wonderful talent, and I hope you continue to use it.

Thanks for notifying us of this.  It definitely seems like something I should add to my reading list, particularly since it might help me gain a better understanding of El-Hazard.

I've been a fan of Blizzard's Warcraft computer game series since playing Warcraft II for the first time and was delighted when the MMORPG "World of Warcraft" was released.  I purchased the game in late November and, over the ensuing months, have been surprised at how many people I know from various messageboards and mailing lists are also playing the game.  I know there are several MMORPG enthusiasts on this site and was wondering if any of you have played the game as well.  If so, on what server and with what character(s)?  I have an orc shaman on the Cenarion Circle server called Gorakinos.

Take care,

Thanks for the clarifications and confusion.  ^^;  While contributing to the El-Hazard Round Robin, I decided to bring in Myuun, completely changing her backstory but keeping what I believed was her physical appearance based on the character profiles on Makoto's "Wanderers Guide to El-Hazard" website.  Both Tim and Makoto seem to agree that Myuun is the raven-haired woman with the resemblace to the Ifuritas and that Salli is the one with the amber hair and red eyebrows(?).  Thanks for the images though, Rob.  That's the first colored artwork of Salli that I remember seeing.

I am suprised that no one beat me to the punch, but that picture you post is rather widely well known.  The OVA Iffy, Wanderers Iffy are givens.  I'm told the taller, more buxom raven-haired woman is acutally IFURINA, a character taken from the radio plays.

Really?  I've been under the impression that she's actually Myuun, another, different character from the radio plays and that Ifurina was merely TV Ifurita with an altered name.

If they either pick it up or start over,I hope that they don't keep ifurita as the 100% ultra serious demon goddess of the OVA.. I mean, I  love parts of the wacky ditz tv version and how the same voice actress had such a diametrically opposed range of presentation....It'd be a shame to waste such ability to make you laugh.

Then again... it is possible that if they did pick it up where they left off... Katsuhiko could try and find another demongod to balance out Makoto's Ifurita if they did return her to El Hazard. What an opportunity that would be... they could give us two very different ifurita's at the same time (Oh the humanity)

In my opinion, I think it would be better if OAV Ifurita and TV Ifurita remained two separate, distinct characters instead of being fused into a single, new character for a series.  They're both so endearing in their own unique ways, and I like them as the different individuals they are.  Of course, seeing them both in the _same_ series could be very interesting.

Isn't the word Neko also japanese for "cat" or "cat-like"?
Or do I have a glitch in my data storage unit again?

Yes.  I'm fairly certain that "neko" translates into English as "cat".

I enjoyed EH: Earth, but I guess I never gave much thought to its "feel."  I guess "feel" doesn't really matter that much to me.  I'm a comedy writer (despite HNA), and Wolfe's work is a bit heavy, for my taste.  And, very generally speaking, the last part of Earth "went too far" and got too weird, for my taste.  But the great story in the first five parts, and his masterful writing in general, still make Earth a classic in my book.

I never gave much thought to "feel" in my own work, either.  If I can keep everyone in character, and if I can come up with a story that hangs together (cough) Alternative World (cough), then I'm happy.  Actually, I think The Charm has some of the feel of the first OVA.  HNA certainly does not, but then, I always meant for it to be something of an experiment.

While I usually enjoy reading El-Hazard fanfiction, I have not been overly fond of many tales that attempt to 'conclude' the saga.  Personally, I conceive El-Hazard as a semi-dream world for the Earthlings.  Makoto is part of a romantic love story and has a challenge/adventure with a beautiful woman waiting for him at the end of it, Fujisawa is now a hero of sorts and has a family, Jinnai has a purpose, an empire to command, and the chance to conquer the world, and Nanami has her own business.  The special powers they received have helped them realize their current situations (with the arguable exception of Nanami although if El-Hazard is ever continued I would dearly like to see her power help make her dreams come true in some manner).  'Ending' El-Hazard often involves ending the dreams in one or more ways, particularly where Jinnai is concerned, and this goes against part of what I consider to be the 'feel' of El-Hazard.

...It also probably doesn't help that I'm a big fan of Jinnai, and many El-Hazard stories that seek to bring the tale to a close tend to focus more on Makoto and Ifurita rather than strive for a balance between Fujisawa, Makoto, Nanami, and Jinnai.   -_-

Really, though, what we'd all REALLY like to see is our El-Hazard Round Robin animated. Now THAT would be something.

I think such an endeavor might come close to bankrupting Pioneer's animation studios.  Just how long is that round robin anyway?

I thoroughly enjoyed Shin Tenchi Muyo. I thought it was hilarious. I think the main problem is that people simply don't take the series for what it's worth. But, rather see it as a bad rehashing. How can you not crack up at the Space Police Policeman running gag (of course, i was having a bad couple of years when I first started watching it, so maybe I just needed all the laughs I could get)? It's not like the writing was even that bad (certainly better than Alternative World). I seriously find it difficult to extract from people exactly why both Shin TM and TMiL2 were so "bad?"

"Tenchi in Tokyo" was, to me, an exceedingly dichotomous series.  The first half felt like a bad rehash of Sailor Moon with the Tenchi cast, and, more often than not, the characters seemed more like caricatures than fresh takes on the original OAV individuals.  On the other hand, though, the second half had some utterly stunning character moments, particularly where Ryoko was concerned, and once the story became serious it was actually fairly good.  Yugi was a consistent bright spot and ranks up there with Pixy Misa as my favorite Tenchi 'villain' (Personally, I like to think that they're alternative versions of one another), and Tenchi's two friends were noteworthy additions to the cast.  Overall, though, I found the tedium of the first half of the series to be a big turn off, and, although I think the second half is much better, I was frustrated and disappointed that more wasn't done with the characters.  The creators spent an entire episode working to create chemistry of some sort between Ryoko and that blonde-haired guy that kind of looks like Kagato, but, instead of developing this, their relationship for the rest of the series seems to fall along the lines of "Hey, you're annoying".  More could have been done with Yugi's followers/servants, and Mihoshi and Kiyone definitely could've been written better.

As for "Tenchi Forever", I actually quite liked that film.  I found it to be a pleasant change from the 'typical' Tenchi tale, and it was nice to see actual growth on the part of the main characters.  Then again, I'm also a Tenchi&Ryoko fan, so I'm probably not the best judge of quality when it comes to that movie.
