Title: [Friday UPDATE] Pic-of-the-MOMENT
Post by: Captain Southbird (EHOL Creator) on March 19, 2003, 04:30:44 am
It should now use your "friendly" usernames.  The old data files are currently still written, however, so to fix them I'd have to go back and manually do it.  But I don't feel like it at the moment.  :P

Just from now on it should use your "Friendly" name as per your Profile setting.

If this final test works, then I'll concider putting in on the site somwhere... (Goodies?)
-------- old message ---------------
This was a script I had partially written but never finished.  I figured I might as well tie up its loose ends and give it a go.

PIC OF THE WEEK

Essentially, this runs a program on the server that randomly grabs one of the screenshot images and puts it up (50% size reduced).

Then you make a not-actually-what's-happening comment on the pic.  Even if you don't know the series from where the image originated!  (That might even work better ;))

Read the rules on the page itself:

UHM, somebody pushing the Archive button randomly.  I'm guessing Neil.  Apparently he didn't note the rules ;p

"Would the administrator please stop pushing the button."

Changing my Pic of the Week into 1/3 Pic-Per-Day ;p

So I dropped #5 due to random acts of administration.  HAR.

Whhhheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!! This is a whole lot of fun! Too bad the Shayla and Jinnai/Diva/Iffy pics are already archived.  :(I had some great ideas for those.

It's not my fault, somebody kept pushing the button ;p

I could probably take them back if I really wanted to, but the system wasn't designed for reverse.

Well, in the end it's okay I guess, it's making for rapid and interesting changes. :P Anyway, here's an idea for those who participipiatedabled:

Should it be where the users (you guys) can opt to submit an image out of the screenshot collections (like select series/episode/image #), or leave this up to admins to still be the posters... and then, how often/many should we be putting up?

Random or pre-chosen images are fine with me.  Keeps things more interesting, I think.

No need to flood new images, as long as old images remain open.  Maybe two or three new ones a week?  I can't visit this board over weekends, myself.  Will the old ones stay up indefinitely?

Could you add a permanent link to the latest image, maybe from the section drop-down list?  Might be easier than tracking down this thread every time, assuming you keep this thing going.

And, this is really really picky, but can you make it use the "display" name instead of the username?  So that it shows "MrWhat" rather than "mrwhat," for example.

Thanks.  This is fun.  ;D  I hope more people join in.

At this time, yes.

Possibly from a site-based "games" section or something eventually.  I did mean to make this a permanant part of the site eventually, I just wanted to make sure it worked before making it general public.

Can do.  This was just a beta run anyway, but yeah, since it seems to work, we can tidy it up.

Random, pre-chosen images are best IMHO. Forces you to think more, and makes it more of a "game." ^_^

Stimulates the mind... brings back memories when i first watched AMG! without any subtitles... and the conversations i make up with my friend when we see our peer borrowing a car from his father...

Father: <Sternly looks at son> Are you gonna take some bimbo and get jiggy with her in my car?
Son: <Shakes his head> Of course not!
Father: <Points inside the car> Just make sure you change the seat covers when you're done.

Title: Alternate caption for #76
Post by: MrWhat on July 10, 2003, 06:48:42 pm
I've had more than one idea for some other pictures, but this is the first time I went and wrote two long captions out.  This was the first one; I submitted the second one (http://www.el-hazardonline.net/El-Hazard/site/picoftheweek/76/index.shtml).  I think the second one was better.

Is there an official policy on multiple captions per picture per user?

SHAYLA:  Do you mean to tell me, no one brought beer!?

NANAMI:  Don't look at *me*, Shayla!  I brought box lunches!

MAKOTO:  I brought a portable CD player and some tunes.

MIZ:  I brought all our swimsuits and some towels.

AFURA:  I shall bring a cool refreshing breeze.

FATORA:  And *I* brought a lesbian.

ALIELLE:  Oh, shoot!  I guess I should have brought some beer.  *I* brought a lesbian, too.

Well, there is no offical policy.  Besides, Fujisawa5678 (or whatever his number is) has done it already.  If you want to, it's allowable, but keep it under controllable means.  Like a limit of two per pic.

Rob (or any administrator)

In case you didn't get my email, can I submit a fan art/fic for you to post on the site?

The question is it's a combination of EH Wanderers and another animation feature; Kiki Delivery Service.

So, would you accept and post it???
It's absolutely G rating

fan art/fic: a picture with the character dialogue and a very short description with it.

ps: I really like those pic of moment thing when it doesn't stray "somewhere else". Somehow it's kinda original

I got it and responded already.  But since you posted it here, I'll say it again; Atanapotnia (I wonder if she's still about?) gave me some [the most :p] a while back, and a bit of it contained some other anime characters in it.  I'm not incredibly strict regarding fanart.  It's okay, although very true you won't get "in-jokes" of others series.  Like my silly Jinnai vs. Nanbara humor that crops up occasionally...

Not that I really expect hentai imagery from common folk, but I'm also not restrictive on that either.  G rating is fine.  Something more disturbing might be fun to get.

Define "somewhere else".  I'm guessing you mean like when it says something that has absolutely no relevance to the picture?  :P  Some of our captioneers have occasionally said something that didn't make a lick of sense ... (but I'll admit, Saucer and MrWhat in particular most often do the best ones ;))

Perhaps it needs more attention drawn to it... admittedly, it's kind of buried there as a small link at the bottom of the news at the moment.  :P

A nice, big graphical button put somewhere on the front page or the control bar or something...

Thanks for the compliments guys. MrWhat's been doing alot better than me lately. Combinations of stress, exhaustions and general wear and tear on my brain have really reduced the quality of my captions. I really need to get my head together. Ugh....

I do agree with a few of your choices there, such as LGJ's for #100.   ;D

One of these days, I'm planning to redo the comic script not only for a better layout (see a later caption script (http://www.el-hazardonline.net/cgi-bin/sarahcaption/display.cgi) I designed for my sister's little site, probably will borrow some elements), but also allow voting of maybe once or twice for any particular image... except probably not your own quotes.  ;)  I mean it to help give confidence to our best.  Although I fear it might make it a little competitive too.  Oh well.  :P

Ha! I'm not worried. Competition is good for the soul! It weeds out all the weak elements and puts the strong where they rightfully deserve to be! It's Darwinism and Evolutionism and, uh, Strong vs the Weak.. ism.

Anyway, I say we go for it! Death to the Makotos, and long eternal life to the Jinnaians! A bucket in every bang, a baby for every kiss! Read my lips, no new taxis! We shall neva surrendar!

and of course, LGJ got the hillarious trophy..man, you really do have the "blood", don't you?

Of course, I've decided to put some effort into updating the script massively... you can already see how I've begun adopting that oh-so-nice one I wrote for my sister.

Sweet, sweet droplist... I think.  I at least hope that's a little more intuitive than the previous design.  I still haven't thought of a good way to manage the date/time stamps.  But a way to sort by recent posting would be wonderful.  After all, a lot of really old ones sometimes randomly get posted to by new participants.  And trying to look through all those dates will hurt your brain.

Um, point being -- you may want to hold off any more favorites list because all of your links will be totally invalidated once I update to a nice, clean, CGI implement that doesn't utilize these redundant space-wasting generated HTMLs.  ;)

One of these days, I'm planning to redo the comic script not only for a better layout (see a later caption script (http://www.el-hazardonline.net/cgi-bin/sarahcaption/display.cgi) I designed for my sister's little site, probably will borrow some elements)

I stumbled onto Sarah's caption contest awhile back.  I'll have to give it a try one of these days.  It could be more difficult when you don't know the characters-- or it could make free-association easier.

My thoughts on the new POTM posted in the new thread (http://www.el-hazardonline.net/cgi-bin/ehol/YaBB.pl?board=ehol;action=display;num=1060184697).

actually I was laughing so hard because I read tickels instead of tackles at first reading....but then the fun is gone after 2nd reading

You should post a "tickling" caption, washuchan!  No one's used that idea yet.  And that would be better than mine.  I'm afraid my 100th caption was actually one of my worst ones  :'(

Come to think of it, I should have written "glomps" instead of "tackles."  Oh well.

Pic-of-the-Moment #111

...

Why do I get the feeling that we're being led to certain conclusions with some of these...?  :P

Actually, to be honest, I thought of at least two or three possibilities just by looking at it.  O_o  My brother comes up with some very strange imagery when armed with megabytes of clipart.

Aye, it's a good picture, but I see you've all been paralyzed by it.

Especially just after that H doujinshi story with those three characters, right?  But I resisted the temptation.

Oh, it took me awhile.  But yes, I was surprised to get in first.

If manipulated images will be included now, there's A Certain Image that's just begging to be used.  Rob, and Sarah, will know what I'm talking about.

BTW, the #109 caption "Keep passing the open windows" was a quote from the book The Hotel New Hampshire, and the title of a song by Queen that was based on that book.  Since Makoto was "contemplating," I was going for a "contemplative" caption, instead of humor.  But, I don't know if that was too obscure, or if everyone got the reference and thought it sucked anyway.

It WAS too obscure for me, but that's okay.  Overall, the picture failed.

I think any picture that fires my imagination to write a caption that's fucked up and/or funny is a success. ^^; The latest is one of the most whacked out ones I've seen yet. Heh heh

I must admit, these new collages are fun.  But do you think we should require a few "real" shots in between the collage types?  I mean, the collage ones certainly add some major new situation types, but using real shots are better for making a new situation out of an old one.

Whaddya think?

Yeah, a mix of different types is probably the best way to go.

Yes, I'd like to see a mix of altered and unaltered images.  There's lots of great captures in your library that haven't been used yet.  And maybe it's just me, but all of the altered images so far have been more difficult to captionate than the unaltered ones.

As far as new situations, for my part, feel free to mix things up even more.  I wouldn't mind seeing EH characters interacting with characters from other anime, and such.  And we haven't seen Jinnai in the DeLorean yet.  Or in the TARDIS, for that matter.

I can easily imagine a photoshop work showing Ryoko vs Shayla Shayla

or

Ifurita, Ifurita, Ifreeta vs Washu, Tsunami Tokimi
heheh, the latter ones are real goddesses

or well...

Ifreeta vs Mihoshi?
(um, I think they'll just spend time chatting and enjoying ice cream)

The only thing that worries me when it comes to actually crossing characters from different series is that, well, there's a chance people won't know them and the jokes will be lost.  (Not that that doesn't happen anyway sometimes, but still.)

Take me, for example.  I've watched very few of the popular animes.  I wouldn't spot most characters from Tenchi, Evangelion, Oh My Goddess... you name it, I likely haven't seen it.  I've only really seen the obscure stuff like El-Hazard sort of is.
