*nervously stands up and waves* Hi everyone. My name is Rowan A. Seven, and this is my first post here. Let me begin by saying that this is probably the best El-Hazard fansite I've come across, and I would like to express my sincere thanks to the site owners for the hard work they've put into this. If I ever obtain something El-Hazard related to contribute, I'll do so.
Anyway, being a halfway decent fanfiction writer (in my obviously biased opinion, at any rate) and a big fan of the El-Hazard series, a story idea has begun to solidify in my mind, and I'd like to attempt to compose it. However, there are two questions I have in regard to the world of El-Hazard before I attempt this. The first is whether or not any decent maps of El-Hazard exist so I can avoid making geographical errors. The other is just how long ago the Ancient wars ended. For some reason the numbers 1,000 and 10,000 years keep popping up in my head, but I can't recall if the exact date was ever specified.
Thank you in advance to those who respond.
Best wishes,
Rowan A. Seven
P.S. Rob, thanks for the suggestion to buy the El-Hazard Roleplaying Resource Book. Being the big Bugrom and Phantom Tribe fan that I am, that book was full of neat facts and ideas and really helped to add depth to El-Hazard.

*absorbs the compliments like a dry sponge in water* Thank you much!

I'm glad to know, although at my rate, I'll end up buying almost everything within possibility. ;) But you never know what the future may bring...

Hmm, good to know, I might need some of you types later for assistance...
The first is whether or not any decent maps of El-Hazard exist so I can avoid making geographical errors.
Unfortunately, not particulaly. The "map" oft used in the series before an episode started is too blurry, and I don't think even has real names printed on it to be useful. The only other thing that really had a map was the Saturn game...
... which I guess you can use, but it has Wanderers bias and only pinpoints where the elemental priestess shrines, Arliman, and Floristica are.
The other is just how long ago the Ancient wars ended. For some reason the numbers 1,000 and 10,000 years keep popping up in my head, but I can't recall if the exact date was ever specified.
As far as I know, no. The only 10,000 year mark would be the time between Ifurita leaving and getting back to Makoto. The actual wars AFAIK have no actual date stamp. We just know it had to be enough time for a highly advanced technology society to blow itself to bits, and thusly have generations of people forget about all that was.
P.S. Rob, thanks for the suggestion to buy the El-Hazard Roleplaying Resource Book...
Glad to be of help. I totally agree about it, it's an amazing bit of writing!
Any other questions on any continuity, feel free to ask.

The map question:
I'm pretty sure that the "Tolkien-esque" map seen on every Wanderers title card and on the credits of OAV episode 1 exists in pristine condition in some rare Japanese art book.
But like Rob says, it's more of a novelty, with no real "directions" as such.
All you really need to know, geographical, is that the good guys (Roshtaria, Arliman etc) are on one side of El-Hazard and the bad guys (Bugrom Hive) are on the other. Both are divided by the Holy River of God, natch.

Heh. It's funny that you mention that. Y'see, I was in my English Literature class yesterday and we discussing where the human race and the world in general would be 20 years from now.
After some discussion, Eve, a fellow student, said that she had read that the world is in for a 1000 year war with Afghanistan (or whoever we hate now) and then we would reach some sort of "golden age".
;) Of course, this relates back to Rob's theory of El-Hazard being the future of Earth. And perhaps if I wasn't a good 10, 000 years off, maybe this "golden age" could be El-Hazard. ;D Ahhh. We can only dream.

GREAT! Now I gotta figure out how I'm going to live that long... (I want to sample those little flying-fish-bird things that they were eating on the first night) ^_^ Yes, I am in a strange, strange mood...
That and robots ^_^ ooh yeah...I wonder if they had any bishi demon gods of destruction...

Well, there are two answers to that, depending on which universe you consider:
OAV1/Wanderers alone: As we only see Ifurita as the only "demon god", it is assumed that she is a unique weapon.
OAV1 + OAV2 - AW/Manga: Demon gods are mass produced and the manga has proven to have male demon gods (can't remember his name at the moment).
So, yeah. You could probably have your "bish" male weapons of destruction.

Sweet! Score one for me ^_^
Must... resist... urge.... to... lust... after... weapon... of... mass... destruction... (meh... who am I kidding?)

Ifurit Ab-Zahal. Poor guy gets his head blown off, not to put too fine a point on it.

... some rare Japanese art book ...
I should have three on the way, provided those three different eBay people have gotten these things moving along... so if there's any truth in that, we'll find out. I even should be getting the one where that "Makoto and Nanami in the 70's" weirdness came from...

I've noticed in more than one thread, that you guys have this "El Hazard is Earth" theory and it's the first time I've ever heard of such. Although it is an interesting theory. And seeing as how, from a physics standpoint, it should be easier to travel through time than space. Then it's entirely possible!
Space travel is theoretically possible, although very impractical. Dimensional warping is a way of getting around this, although again impractical. But, if you think of time as being linear like a ruler and everything and everyone that ever existed being marked on it as such, isn't it possible to slide up and down this given ruler if you had the power to do such? It would make all the comings and goings between "Earth" and "El Hazard" make more sense (if you even compelled to break it down as such, it is just fantasy after all ^^; ).
-
Well, for a short duration I was supporting the theory, at least as a curiosity. However, my most recent workings have made it unimportant either way, so I don't think about it too much.
However, wether it's true or not, I do like to theorize time as a linear dimension (4th). El-Hazard, however, would cause time paradoxes if there's only a 4th dimension, when events performed would cancel previous events making the whole situation impossible and an eternal logic loop and such. (Ifurita can't actually go back and get Makoto before Makoto ever got to El-Hazard in the first place...) Thusly, wether it's actually needed in travel or not, I also speculated another dimension (5th) being loosely labeled "existance". It's an extra to define cumulitively where (first three dimensions) something occured, when (4th) it occured, and under what set of circumstances that led up to the point (5th). Basically, to prevent the paradox, a version of when it never happened automatically subdivides onto a different 5th dimensional track, and the one where it did becomes the active one. The mere existance of the other uneventful track keeps things in check.
But that's all background. Wether El-Hazard is actually Earth currently remains unimportant to note.
-
Well, there wouldn't be paradoxes is you think of time as a Mobius strip. This one friend of mine has some "issues" with time travel. But if you've read Vonnegut's "Slaughterhouse 5" (I think it was Slaughterhouse 5? it's been so long since I read it), there is a race of aliens in there that exist at all points in time from their birth to their death. And they witness these events every day of their life. It's like they're looking at a vast landscape. And humans are looking through only a tiny pinhole at the same scene. Anyway, I find it to be an interesting concept.
-
Are we talkin' about EH?
-
We're talking about concepts of EH.
-
Oh, okay. Now i'm actually understanding this.
-
We're talking about concepts of EH.
Not that it matters, since I never emphasized the point-- but I always assumed that Earth, El-Hazard and Creteria were the same planet, or very nearly the same planet, in three alternate universes.
Earth and El-Hazard would be widely separated, by whatever it is that separates dimensions, since the two worlds are so different. But El-Hazard and Creteria could be much more closely related. Creteria could literally be an alternate El-Hazard.
-
I always assumed that El Hazard and Earth were two seperate planets, and Creteria was El Hazard at some other point in time (past or future). But, it is interesting to think they they could all be the same place, at the same time in different dimensions (if you subscribe to the theory of an infinite number of different dimensions existing side by side at all times). If the latter were true though, why does the Eye of God exist on El Hazard and Creteria, but not Earth?
-
Keep in mind the Eye of God from El-Hazard transported them to Creteria in the first place. It probably just took all of them and itself along. (Although there's pitfalls all about the Alternative World story and pictures and stuff... but I'm working the best I can here. :P)

Well, like I said before-- El-Hazard and Creteria could be "closer" in the multi-dimensional universe, than either of them are to Earth. Their proximity would make them more similar to each other, and their distance from Earth would make both of them more different from Earth.
You could argue that it took more power (from Ifurita) to send Makoto from Earth to EH, and it took him longer to travel between dimensions (with the whole flash-forward sequence and all the celestial imagery).
To get from EH to Creteria, all it took was a little nudge from Arjah, a flash of light from Makoto's circuit thingy, a quick slide against a plain-white background, and there they were. Suggesting that EH and Creteria are "closer."
OK, I'm just completely making this up.
Creteria seems to be a future El-Hazard, if for no other reason than the title of the second episode is "The Door To The Future Opens." But there's too many little things about Creteria that make more sense to me as an alternate history than a future history.
And, as unsubtle as The Alt World series generally was, if Creteria was the future of El-Hazard, the gang probably would have found their own graves, or something.
EDIT: For clarity, I hope.
-
if Creteria was the future of El-Hazard, the gang probably would have found their own graves, or something.
Only if they had wished to make the point blantant.
Plus it's not like they had visited any graveyards.
And even if they had, unless it was one deticated specifically for them, there's still a chance they might've missed it.
In BTTF3, Doc Brown's grave was only found because of the dog. Otherwise Marty and 1955 Doc would've gone home and never even knew about it.

Yes, but then you'd have to explain how it came to be disassembled and have farms and colonies on the pieces?

That is also plausible, since parallel dimensions can either be similar or completely different form one another. I dunno, I just think the "continuity issue" explaination puts it best. ^^; Also what Rob said about fanfics.

Dude. That's most impressive. :o (You need to add a smiley with its jaw falling open.) Did you happen to have that picture on hand, or did you just go and capture that image for this post?
-
Just captured it. DVDs are such wonderful things as far as computer compatability go. El-Hazard and BTTF Trilogy -- the only DVDs I need. ;)
... buut I keep Hand Maid May around for the hell of it too.

Speaking of Hand Maid May, feel free to post some screenshots of Kei any time you like. ;D

I'm not actually sure what this topic is about any more, is it El Hazard, Back to the future or Hand Maid May?
-
Larewen - "I'm not actually sure what this topic is about any more, is it El Hazard, Back to the future or Hand Maid May?"
You and me, Lar.
I can only guess it's about... Geography and Chronology.
-
How am I supposed to understand that?! I don't even know what chronology is!!!!! >:( >:(
-
Chronology...
What is the best way to explain this...
It's the study of time. The best way to explain this...
A timeline.
My cronology would be...
August 14, 1985 - Born
1988 - Learned to speak (I was diagnosed with Asperenger's disease, part of the spectrum of Autism)
1991 - Attended Elementary School
1995 - Survived pneumonia and bronchitis
1996 - Graduated from Elementry School, started Middle School
1999 - Started Secondary School
March 25, 2003 - Current date
June 22, 2003 - Offical graduation day from high school.
-----
See now?
-
I think I get it now. Yip. Finally I understand something!!
*Lar gets over excited and falls into black hole.* Darn it.
-
*Sees Lar come out of black hole and crashes on the ground*
There is an end to these holes, you know...
-
OW!!!!!!!!
Why didn't you tell me before I got sucked in?! >:(
Oh wel, too late now.
Yes, I'm doing Geography as my rota at school just now, It's incredibly boring, no offence to anyone who likes it.
-
Larewen - "I'm not actually sure what this topic is about any more, is it El Hazard, Back to the future or Hand Maid May?"
You and me, Lar.
I can only guess it's about... Geography and Chronology.
Actually, I was thinking of discussing the signifigance of the Valkyrie transformation in Macross next......
-
WA?!!?
That'll just confuse me more!!!
-
Don't worry, little Alielle.
-
I'm little Alielle now? *Lar looks confused* ???
-
Aleille is 15 in the show.
You are 12 coming to be 13.
So...
You are little Alielle (agewise).
-
For the convienience of Rob, I have deducted an evil plan.
Go to moviemistakes.com and look at the Back to the future mistakes. Sadly there are more mistakes in the whole of the The fellowship of the ring than in all three BTTF films.
So that's what I'm little Alielle. What's Rosh then?
-
Ms. Jewel is the same age as Fatora (and I couldn't see the picture for some reason). And, if memory serves me correctly, she is the same age as Makoto (17). She is simply Fatora.
-
Tim. I'm not stupid. I know Alielle and Fatora are both lesbians. And so are me and Rosh. You concocted that evil plan didn't you?
-
Actually, you two did.
I was just reading the posts, is all.
-
Darn. I should have seen that one coming. Okay. so who are you then?!
Are you insulting us?
-
Who am I then?
Don't know.
Making fun of you?
No. Hey, if you like this kind of thing, that's your business. But I don't make fun of others because of their preferences.
-
Sorry. I don't mind I'm just havin' a laugh.
Wouldn't you be Makoto?
-
??? Makoto? ???
That's... just odd...
-
Well, he's the same age as you.
-
You're right about that...
But does that make me want to be him?
-
Okay. You win. I have to go though, so I'll talk to you later, or tomorrow. Or some other time.
Buh-bye.
Luv Lar
-
So long, Lar.
-
Well, he's the same age as you.
O_O; So if your the same age as a character... that makes you that character?
OOH OOH can I be Rock? I'm about the same age as he is in stories where he DIES!
-
You have to be the same sex as the person who is the same age as you. Therefore, you cannot be Rock.
It's like this:
Lar- Alielle
Rosh- Fatora
Tim- Makoto
You- ...erm...
-
You have to be the same sex as the person who is the same age as you. Therefore, you cannot be Rock.
But... I WANNA be Rock!
He's all nifty and reckless and self absorbed and evil...
-_-; I'm not real interested in too many female characters... they are usually... meh...
*can't think of any cool female characters her age in anime *
... by the time they are my age in anime they are usually housewives
-
What about Ryoko or Ayeka from Tenchi Muyo? I'm not sure what age they are. But I'm the same age as Little Washu.
-

...There's no Need for Tenchi...
I'm almost 23... I'm gonna be an OBAASAN soon...
On that note I MIGHT be the same age as Madoi in Rockman EXE (I think she's a bit older than that, since she got all pissy when Meiru was buggin' her about her age) :p but ... umm Madoi kinda pisses me off... heh I'd rather be Miyuki... or MASA! Heh, Masa is awesome... oh but I'm not allowed to be a guy... :p
you guys are no fun...
-
If you really want to be a guy, then you can be. I was just bugging you.
I know there is a no need for tenchi series, but I've only seen Tenchi Muyo and Tenchi Universe.
-
If you really want to be a guy, then you can be. I was just bugging you.
Yes... yes I do... I relate to male characters better... they are more fun... and they are fun to look at :D
I know there is a no need for tenchi series, but I've only seen Tenchi Muyo and Tenchi Universe.
umm actually I meant literally, "THERE'S NO NEED FOR TENCHI" the title does not lie... *not a fan of Tenchi*
-
Um......Hi!

Pixie, if you're gonna random chat, use Hey! Post me Something! Or, this is for non-EH topica. I started both of them just so that I could random post. So go onto one of those. Kay?

I'm almost 23... I'm gonna be an OBAASAN soon...
Hardly ;)
I'm pretty sure I'm not the oldest one here anymore, but I'll speak as the elder. Don't worry. Granted, I think aging is harder on women in most cultures, but still-- I'm enjoying life at 33 a lot more than I did at 23.
"Remember, you may have to grow old, but you don't have to mature." --Red Green. Words to live by ;D
I guess I'm about Fujisawa's age. I'm not super-strong, but I do have brown hair and perpetual five-o'clock shadow :P
-
Hardly ;)
Heh don't get me wrong... I wouldn't go back to being any younger for ANYTHING...
Just as far as anime is concerned, it sorta goes like this for women characters:
Little girl 3-6
School girl 7-13
Eligible female 14-25
After 25, the anime woman becomes either:
1. a genki housewife or
2. turns into a shrivled old lady
O_O;
As I have yet to find a man who can put up with me... I think I'm gonna turn into a shrivled old anime lady soon...
;D Outside of anime I am comfortable with my age...
-

Ah. Of course. You were talking about anime characters, weren't you. Never mind me (yet again) :P

You're 60,000 years old!? :o

Washu is actually 20, 000 years old. But in our years, she is in the body of a twelve year old, therefore, I am the same age.

I can make sense sometimes.
