Title: EHOL's Top Anime of All-Time: CURRENTLY TABULATING
Post by: Saucer on May 11, 2004, 09:51:50 pm
Here's something fun to try, how about a poll to determine which anime series' are favored by EHOL members, and how do they rank? Simply list your top ten anime, and rank them 1-10. It's important to rank them, as the anime with more votes will rank higher on the list. Points will be determined by ranking. For example: #1 = 10 points, #2 - 9 points, #3 = 8 points, etc...  I will tally them up Friday, June 11 and slap the whole thing together.

Here is my list as an example:

1. El-Hazard
2. Kimagure Orange Road
3. Aim for the Top! Gunbuster
4. Scrapped Princess
5. St Luminous Mission High School
6. Voices From a Distant Star
7. Tenkuu no Escaflowne
8. Love Hina
9. Full Metal Panic
10. Jungle wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu

FAQ

What if I haven't seen ten anime?
Just list every anime you have seen!

What if I don't/can't rank them?
Then I'll just assign points to them depending on how much I like the series! MWAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!!! No seriously, just try your best!

Can I vote for a hentai?
Yes.

Can I vote for a manga, game or non-anime animation?
No.

Can I change my titles/order after I post?
Yes, as long as you do so before the deadline, Friday, June 11.

Any other questions, post 'em! Otherwise, let's get on with it and have a good time!

What if one "anime" has several different series-- of shall we say "variant quality?" *chuckles* El-Hazard itself comes to mind (TMW is #1 or near it, but if all of them are considered it drops quite a bit).

Anyway....

10) Full Metal Panic (I like it, but I've only seen 12 episodes)
09) Gundam [Wing]
08 ) Rurouni Kenshin
07) Ah! My Goddess (now, the manga would be #1...)
06) Love Hina
05) Tenchi Muyo!
04) Bubblegum Crisis (Tokyo 2040 only)
03) El-Hazard (TMW and Wanderers only)
02) Crest/Banner of the Stars
!1!) Inuyasha

Looks about right.

Edit: The quick-command for the sunglasses smiley ( 8 ) )has got to be changed. :P

8.  Kodocha / Child's Toy

MrWhat, has this been licensed or has it just not made it into the realm of digi-subs yet? I've been reading the manga recently and am thoroughly enjoying it! I can't find it anywhere on Bit Torrent though. I have done a search for VHS fansub distributors in awhile, can you recommend one?

Let's say "franchise" for now. Though if you insist on strictly voting for a single series and dismissing the rest of the franchise, I suppose I can work it out some way.

Sorry, I should have been clearer. All anime are allowed, TV series, movie, TV movie, OVA, what not!

Last month, Funimation announced that they had licensed Kodocha for planned release in spring or summer of next year.  They did a heckuva good job on Fruits Basket, so I have high hopes.

102 (!) episodes were made.  AFAIK, it was never fully fansubbed.  I DLed the first 36 episodes, plus some scattered episodes after #52.  The first ep is insanely hilarious.  The second ep is poor, but it evens out after that.  For a childrens' series, there's a lot of heavy tear-jerking drama too.

This makes me all nostalgic for the summer of 2001, before I discovered El-Hazard.  My downloads of Kodocha, Love Hina, and the first few non-lousy eps of Excel Saga pretty much got me started on anime, and on Japanese self-study.

I'm afraid that I've never gotten any fansubs on tape, so I can't help with that.  And I haven't DLed any digisubs for more than a year, due to real-life crap-fests.  I have more legit DVDs to watch than free time for watching them, now.

Well, I might as well add to this list...

10. All-Purpose Cultural Catgirl Nuku Nuku
9. Miyuki-chan in Wonderland
8. Maria-sama ga Miteru
7. Steel Angel Kurumi 2
6. Galaxy Fraulein Yuna
5. Asagiri no Miko
4. Azumanga Daioh
3. Sailor Moon
2. Jungle wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu
1. El-Hazard

Although to be honest, the permanent presence of EH at number one is starting to feel like a nominal position... there hasn't been any new EH in so long, and I've seen it so many times, that right now I'll probably get more pleasure out of Guu or Sailor Moon...

Yes.  I think for most of us El-Hazard is slipping into "Classic", but no longer a prolonged "favorite" in a current list.

It's also just occurred to me that of my ten choices, four have yuri as a major theme, and eight have openly lesbian characters ^_^ Interestingly, not many catgirls though. (My two primary obsessions in anime...)

I was considering pointing that out, but figured it would come as a surprise to nobody. ;D

Actually, I was a little surprised that Battle Athletes wasn't on the list, seeing as how it's considered by many to be a virtual hotbed of lesbian subtext. ^^;

And, it has a catgirl. Of sorts.

Heh heh, I think the OVA was a masterpiece. But the TV series leaves quite alot to be desired IMHO.

So I've heard... it's one of those series I've always meant to watch but never got round to. Similarly Utena isn't on the list either... it probably would be if I had the time to watch it.

Oh, well... I think that settles it ^_^

And going back to my catgirl comment, closer examination of my list reveals that four of the series do have catgirls (Nuku Nuku, Miyuki-chan, Asagiri no Miko and Sailor Moon) and two have almost-catgirls (Guu and Yuna). Interesting though that Miyuki-chan is the only series to combine my favourite elements in a single character...

Hmm... already a pattern is developing. Will the #1 anime be El-Hazard or Tenchi Muyo?

Okay. Just for fun (and because I'm extremely pissed about something at work that I need to calm down about), I tried to tally people's choices as best I could and came up with this list:

1  El-Hazard (11)
2  Tenchi Muyo (9)
3  Love Hina (5)
4  Trigun (4)
   Evangelion (4)
6  Jungle wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu (3)
   Ah My Goddess (3)
   Cowboy Bebop (3)
   Slayers            (3)
   Revolutionary Girl Utena (3)
   Sailor Moon (3)

What I also find interesting is that, so far as  I can tell, about 72 individual series have been listed so far.

Cool, thanks Morris! Slayers would have had another point but I dropped it off my list during various revisions (it was my favorite anime for years, but many things since have grabbed my attention with greater force). Hope things are going better for you at work!

1) FLCL - Fooly Cooly (6 episode OAV)
2) Neon Genesis Evangelion (26 episode TV series, 2 movies)
3) El-Hazard - The Magnificent World (6 episode OAV)
4) Tenchi Muyo! Ryoohki (6 episode OAV)
5) Di Gi Charat (13 episode TV series)

That's currently it. The order usually circulates depending on my mood.
