One of the strangest experiences I've ever had was the night I was flipping through the yellow pages for some such and happened to hit "beauty shops".  Someone had proudly displayed a "Chibi-Asuka-in-Plug-Suit" illo right next to their ad.

You find anime art in the weirdest places...

Some new-to-me finds.  Who needs sleep?

A commissioned fanart of OVA-Ifurita and Makoto.

Yet another wonderful casual OVA-Ifurita portrait by Tsutaya Katsuodou.

And a nifty Ura LiveJournal icon by Otaku Ohki.  I'm using it now, myself.

Mm... I dunno.  Something about the way they drew that face cries "MAN WHO WISHES HE WAS IFURITA".   ^^;  Perhaps my ever knowledgable sister will be able to tell me artistically why I might think it.

I thought something along those lines too... but mine was more like, "That is one ugly picture of Ifurita" ^^; I think basically the WHOLE FACE is the problem.

For anime, her eyes are too small for your typical female character -- especially one in a coy position. In this case it just comes off creepy like a guy in a trench coat who's about to flash you -- the mouth adds to this disturbing effect.

The nose is a little long, as is the jawline. Her chin is too long too and square. It's like she has Fujisawa's chin, all she's missing is the stubble.

Her cheeks are kind of high, cos her eyes are so small, so her face looks more hollow, like she's underfed.

so here is what we have:

and here is what I did in about 10 minutes to TRY and fix it:

It's not a GREAT fix, but I think it's better than it was :\ She at least looks female now instead of a cosplayer in drag.

Does that help?

Her head is kinda weird shaped to begin with, so you'd pretty much have to redraw the whole thing to fix that :p The back of the head needs to be reshaped. Her head is also a little big for her body even at that angle (unless we're seeing her through a fish-eye lens) :p

Can you tell that just about everything in this picture bothers me?

I think your fixes are quite an improvement Sarah! I shouldn't be so critical, since I can't draw myself, but the orignal does really look bad. I'm not a huge fanart person, but bad Ifurita fanart really bugs me. One major problem is her hair, or the lack thereof. Ifurita has hair down to her waist. Her hair is too short in that pic. And she has a neck like a heavyweight boxer. But gawd, it does look like a man! You're right about the chin and jawline. And her shoulders should slope a little more, like a womans. Not be straight like a mans. Well, I suppose it's fitting because according to J-List, "Supposedly in Tokyo there's a trend towards men who are interested in wearing make-up, just like girls. Called "Morios," these men put heart stickers on their faces and dress in outrageous fashions like the kogals of a few years ago -- you cold almost call them "koguys."" And the Japanese always were kinda fascinated with transvestites, so...... O_O;
