El-Hazard Online / The Alternative Contributer
« on: October 28, 2003, 11:17:10 am »
From Oct 28th newspost:

Quote
Maybe we should whip up a "Test of [El-Hazard] Knowledge" online test as an alternative to becoming a "Site Contributer" through conventional means? I don't want to disclude the honest EH fan folk because they can't think of what to contribute. Okay, forum time...

Many of you guys have been real good about getting contributions to me and you've earned a nice title for yourself.  But right now if you DON'T do that, you get no MP3's.  I'm sure quite a few of our members who register are real deal El-Hazard fans with just no idea of how to contribute stuff.  I know a lot of the stuff I have now I had no idea existed before and we're STILL finding new stuff all the time.  (Plastic figurines?  Ha!)

Anyway, so I'm thinking for the honest yet unable to contribute among the masses ought to get a fair chance by proving El-Hazard Fan-ness with a test of El-Hazard "fact".  It'll be all multiple choice so that I don't have to "grade" them and it can be automated.  (Unless some of you want to become "test graders" and then things get interesting.   ^^; )  It ought to cover all the things that they should know like "the main young boy character's name is Makoto" or "Fatora and Alielle are lovers in the OAV".  (Even Wanderers-only watchers tend to know THAT fact!)

So I ask you... whaddya think and got any suggested questions?  ;)

Note: For those with contributing pride, they won't get the title "Contributer"; they'd be "Tested Through" or something.  :P

El-Hazard Online / Quickie: Japanese Reader, Cat name? (MrWhat, etc.)

Rune's cat.  One of those Japanese-artist fanart sites named it "Nora".  I was curious if the scribbles on the page say anything about that.  If it's possible to read that at all.

El-Hazard Online / Mini Confirm-Or-Kill (Saucer maybe?)
« on: October 17, 2003, 07:05:41 pm »
I remember once a long time ago I heard someone tell me of two El-Hazard references in other animes.  I can't remember specifics like which animes or what happened when these references were made.  >_<  I just thought of them recently and wanted to know if anyone else had heard of either...

* A young girl (?) claiming Katsuhiko Jinnai is her cousin
* Mr. Fujisawa walking in on a scene

There you have it...

Non-El-Hazard Topical Discussions / Too much fun in MSPaint for 30 seconds

The one on the right looks perhaps like an American cartoon artist may have [sort of] depicted Jinnai. :P

FYI:  The left one was utter sillines which evolved into "Hey, that looks like Jinnai.  Let's try eyeballing him from the wallscroll."

And then I did a couple more because I was in the mood and laughing at the first one too much:

Fujisawa's is my favorite.  You can't beat that.

El-Hazard Online / Graugh... I want you all to hear this MP3

I forget if I ever showed this off before, but I want to hear what you think of it.  It's my own mastering via an Ifurita MIDI to turn the theme into something militaristic.  It has three or four simple repetitions because I was actually planning possibly for it to be used in one of my gaming projects.  But just wait until you hit about 1:20, then it climaxes pretty nicely (but still fairly loopable for the aforementioned reason)

I've actually played with the Ifurita MIDI a thousand times over... I have a couple other variations including a simple fanfare version and the "clocktower ring" one I was working on.

Also here's something I did a while before that one, the "Boys Be Free" / "Back In Love" Redneck instrument version.   ^^;

I found this scan on an old backup CD of mine.  I think the "From:" is pretty funny.  ;D  (Hint: I registered my copy of MSVC 5.0 Professional way back when, so I'm concidered an official Microsoft Developer, hur hur.)

El-Hazard Online / Pic-of-the-Moment v2.0 W-I-P
« on: August 06, 2003, 10:44:57 am »
http://www.el-hazardonline.net/cgi-bin/picofthemoment/display.cgi

This is the updated script so far.  I'm planning on adding those nice extras like voting and hopefully forum-esque dating so that when really old ones are posted to, you're notified of it.  But since I figure voting should total a score and notify of our most popular captioneers, as well as all the rigs needed for simple things like keeping you from voting more than once or twice... well, that'll be some work applied over a few days.  ;)

The major changes so far for those who care are:

1) The stored information has been converted to data files put together through CGI, instead of generated HTML files.  This will enable the possibility of all sorts of additional features, but at the very minimum now correctly records the poster and will follow any changes to their "Friendly Display Name" that may occur, as well as link to their on-site profile.  :)

2) The administrators had a limited random picture picker thing, but we really stopped using it very early on because the picks were just not funny.  Now we just select something and say "Hey, I think this has potential" and we slap it in.  This note of course only applies to us admins.

3) There's a new rule #5 -- basically, you can't directly reference characters who aren't present in the image.  One of our captioneers was a little too regular at doing this.  ;)  It's detracting because part of the challenge is to fill in the dialog blanks of all those who are present based on their expressions, not just write a random fanfic short or something.  Of course, you can still indirectly reference characters i.e. "Oh, Shayla won't like this one bit." even if Shayla weren't present.  But Shayla can't actually say or do anything in this example.

The script appears to be functional.  As soon as Tim gets home, I'll have him add a #101 since I think he has one in mind.  And then we can see if there are any immediate bugs.

Just in case, and to preserve a few old links, the previous "Pic of the Week Moment" script is still intact [temporarily!], but just refrain from using it, okay?

Now, for discussion:

A) How should votes be controlled?  Do you get one or two?  I mean, sometimes people write something really good, and someone writes something that deserves maybe half-credit on the same image.  If two votes are allowed, are both worth the same, or is one a half vote?

B) How should I handle "new pic updates" as far as the interface is concerned?  That is, when someone posts on any image and you haven't seen it yet, should it jump to the top of the droplist, get listed under a secondary list of some sort ("stuff you haven't seen yet")

C) Any other feature you'd like to see / stlyle change suggestions?

El-Hazard Online / Ha!  If the first topic wasn't enough..(Douji x 3)
« on: August 04, 2003, 11:25:17 pm »
Kiddo Cabbusses: Hold on a sex. ... *sec

Well, out of nowhere, I get an email from our good buddy Mr. What.  Seems he has some more doujinshi's to share with us.  Note that Mr. What does NOT own these, he is only sharing what he already found public.  But it's pretty nifty anyway!

Now, to prevent what happened in the last topic...

* Contrary to popular belief, I did not create these.  ;p(Nor did MrWhat for that matter.)  Do not tell attack either of us for bringing a little Nanami-on-Alielle imagery into the world when we didn't do it.

* It's HENTAI.  It's icky, sticky, gooey, naked fun ... not for the whole family.  Remember that by clicking and of the images below you're setting yourself up to take on any and all resulting risks, brain melts, or bodily responses you need not tell me about.

On the plus side, there's absolutely no gender-benders in any of these!  Maybe gender-orientation switches at random, but at least what's expected to be under the hood is indeed there.

In case you viewed this too fast, there are little reminders at the bottom of each post here.  I had to break this up cause it was just too big.  :P  (Eventually I'll make these into site pages.)

Please wait for three more posts...

Fanart looks okay.  I should get in contact with this person, seeing as I don't know a single El-Hazard fan that lives within any good distance.  And hey, if I want the fanart, I could probably save on shipping by just going to pick it up.  ;)
