Non-El-Hazard Topical Discussions / Re: My computer's dead. :(

*nods* Thanks. I'd looked at the specs for both our computers (among quite a few others, naturally) and noticed that laptop and desktop HDs were usually different... but never really thought much of it. *chuckles* I appreciate that-- me being me I probably would've learned the hard way, heh.

And... the new HD/XP CD thing seems like my best shot (I've asked on my LiveJournal and a few other sites also, and that's the consensus, at least after I point out that XP's restore didn't work). I'll keep y'all posted. Thanks again. :)

Well... that's sort of the other problem. My brother's computer is a laptop. And he's pretty adamant about not cracking it open and thereby voiding warranty (which is just as well, since it wouldn't help in this case, anyway). And his hard drive doesn't have all that much space left. We've thought about taking his out and using it as the primary drive in my tower, and copying data that way-- but it wouldn't get much of it (maybe enough; we're keeping that option open) and he doesn't want to do that anyway (for the aforementioned need of not messing with his laptop).

So yeah. :/ Bob... in your opinion, do you think the "restore" option would work on a non-Dell hard drive? It has an XP OS disc in addition to the normal restore disc, so that's why I assumed it did (I tried using it as a boot disc also, but unsurprisingly it still hangs with the driver problem). Either way I need the hard drive anyway; but do you honestly think it'd work? I trust your judgment here; I'm pretty decent with computers, but then I figured "It's no big deal; I can always fix a little software driver problem."

^^;

Non-El-Hazard Topical Discussions / My computer's dead. :(

What a topic for my first thread here, eh? Well, maybe sharing some misery can help. *chuckles* Here's what happened; to those [morbidly and otherwise] curious....

I was trying to uninstall Roxio Easy CD Creator earlier today-- because, y'know, it's bad-- upon downloading something else instead. Everything worked fine, and I removed the files (doing a system check to make sure I didn't miss anything). I restarted.

...and Windows does not restart. :/ I retry and hit the "use last successful configuration." No change. A bit worried now, I try Safe Mode. No change. I try safe mode/command prompt... and I figure out the problem. When the computer shows me its driver list, it hangs after reading the AGP driver. Something was deleted without my doing-- I'm assuming it had to do with Roxio's program-- and now I can't start the computer up at all-- so even if I knew what was missing, I can't do anything about it.

*sighs* And I have way too much unbacked-up data on my hard drive to justify a reformat and restore, and system restore obviously deletes everything. I can't use an XP boot disc since the operating system disc in the set doesn't work that way, nor can I download an ISO (my computer was the one with the burner and "software," heh).

So now Prometheus is dead and I'm using my brother's computer. :( The only thing I can think of is getting another internal hard drive, removing the current one, using the restore disc on the new one to get XP and my Dell info on it, transferring the data from the current hard drive (by using it as a slave) after that, and then reformatting the current one (and using it basically as a backup drive).

Does anyone have any better ideas? Remember, I can't even get safe mode or the prompt to work, and losing my data is unacceptable. If there's any suggestions, I'm certainly open to them now....

Ah, sorry for missing that. Happy Birthday to you; may you have a good twenty-second year of life and all that. :) I've been 21 since last July and I certainly hope your year is better than mine. *laughs* Out of curiosity... did you do anything cool (or even just mundane) for your birthday?

More... stuff. Yeah. Good to see a few people starting to come back again. :) Introducing Sena, since so far I think there's exactly one other female Phantom Tribe NPC. *chuckles*

---

Senali carefully watched the human girl in her mid-teens follow the remaining Bugrom and their leader into a guest room at the end of the royal hallway. She frowned and self-assuringly patted the handle of her dagger in her belt, quickly studying the situation. She knew that humans-- even aggressive, self-confident ones, like this girl seemed to be-- were not usually competent fighters; and even a lower-class Bugrom was dangerous by sheer virtue of its size and power. But she knew she knew that... and was advancing anyway.

As a Huntress, Sena had no real love for humans; but she had a sense of honor higher than that of most of her race. She steeled herself and then silently swung down to the floor from her perch above the mantle of the door, drawing both her knives as she reached the ground. The pale-skinned human that was watching this girl with a sort of practiced distaste couldn't see all of his followers in the wan moonlight that alone illuminated the room, and she knew that so far from the Hive any link the Bugrom might've had with each other would be ineffective.

And of course none could see her. Senali was adept in her powers, being older than the typical headstrong Phantom Tribe warrior; and was known for making very few mistakes-- although that didn't mean as much in a caste where major mistakes were often fatal.

She stealthily crept behind one Bugrom guarding the door-- a purple-colored giant towering nearly two feet above her-- and in one rapid motion jumped up to catch her feet on the wall beside it, and spun upward, driving both daggers into the vulnerable exoskeletal joints around the creature's neck. It collapsed with only the quietest click of chitin striking the floor.

The Bugrom on the other side of the door quickly glanced over, seeing his comrade on the ground-- but the way he was keeled over and, with no blood visible through Sena's second illusion, misunderstood. The red-plated insect dutifully scuttled over to check on him-- and also fell without a sound. Senali knew that the legs of a Bugrom were its easiest point of attack-- they were essentially unarmored cords of muscle, as they had to be to be so thin and yet support their titanic upper bodies-- and had sliced through both with her razor-sharp daggers. As it fell forward she impaled it in the neck, and, still invisible, sheathed both blades and dragged the two Bugrom, with to her painful slowness from their weight; out of the room and into the hall.

She had thought of helping the girl further, but decided against it; knowing that she needed to report back in and having already learned what she came to investigate-- the Palace was in danger, its staff heavily depleted, but the Royal Family was out of direct danger through the timely intervention of, to her; random do-gooders.

Sena moved with haste back through the Great Hall and out the window of a lower tower, and began crossing the rooftops back toward the Floristican Enclave. She began to relax; the mild breeze through her hair and loose green vest was soothing, and she had always enjoyed the quiet hours of the morning.

Good luck to you, human girl... I hope you survive... I admire your courage. We're not so different, I think... doing what we must, no matter how difficult... because that's the path we've ended up walking. ...even for one trained to fight and kill. May God protect you and your friends.

Her rapid series of rooftop jumps came to an abrupt halt and she landed easily on the ground in front of the safehouse she had, for months now, finally accepted as "home." She took a minute to catch her breath, noticing, somewhat surprised, that there was still some light in the front room; meaning that either Kai or Mato were still awake, for some reason. She went for the door, stopped, and grinned; and opened the window and jumped through it instead.

There was a pause, of course. And then almost on cue a shout of "D---it, Sena, don't you ever bloody knock?!" from Kai, and a frantic shuffling (and hiding) of papers.

Just like home, she thought, and grinned again.

---

Xan was still furious, but he couldn't deny that he felt much better-- and although it went against his principles he grudgingly accepted that he did owe the scientists for the use of their no-doubt expensive regenerative apparatus.

His hands were still clenched into fists. Why didn't they just ask? Assassins like me are used to making deals and negotiations. And they actually enjoy it, as well, as long as the other party doesn't make the mistake of trying to cheat....

That pillow represents all that is soulless and wrong in the money-grubbing, indecency-peddling industry of corruption. And I offer it heartfelt condemnation.

...anybody know if they have a Helena pillow? :]

And... any ideas regarding the PhotoShop/image editing suggestions?

Which continuity was GXP based off of? I only saw like one episode.

You didn't miss much. :D

The original OAV series, actually; although a few years afterward (yes, even after OAV #3, heh; which amuses me to no end). Like Jeff pointed out it tossed in some characters from the novelizations (namely Seto and Airi), and in one episode (#17, if I recall right) Seina catches up with Tenchi and the girls (all of them, actually, including Noike; although Mihoshi shows up late). There's a few reminders in that episode (for one, Washu talks about designing Ryo-ohki and "Fuku," the new cabbit; which didn't happen in the other continuities).

That is quite possibly the first time I've ever heard Tenchi compared to Shakespeare. *laughs*

Don't get me wrong, I still like it and all (especially the OAVs and Magical Project S)... the new stuff just feels a bit wrong. Like finding out the old grandfather you've always looked up to was really a terrorist or something. :D

I read through the first site's first two synopses-- the second one (Yosho's-- or "Yoshyo's," heh) was pretty interesting. I also much preferred Kryo's chapters of "Jurai" that are done (I'm glad there's some people willing to translate, heh; I couldn't puzzle through Japanese to save my life).

Seto just irks me more, though. She was bad enough in GXP; but the novelization just paints her even more as a cliched superbeing-- the big difference being that she's female. If I were Kagato, I'd be afraid of the woman who can beat hundreds of pirates in seconds (and without a kamehameha :D), get anyone to do what she wants, lord it over the Juraian Royal Family, and teach Sasami how to cook! :[ Blech. These guys can do better than that.

I guess what just irks me is that rather than expand on the OAV continuity-- which they do to some degree, granted-- most of it seems to be so much new material it borders (or crosses, in several cases) on revisionism. Was it necessary that everyone [besides Seto, who is apparently older than God] be teenagers (or younger) when they originally met-- especially for Juraians (who by the canon tend to look like kids even into the hundreds of years of age)? Or that conflict issues must automatically become personal (instead of Ayeka going after Ryoko for taking Yosho away-- as the OAVs indicate-- it's now personal, since Ryoko attacked her in her garden, and Ryo-ohki and Ryuoh actually fought for awhile)?

You might not have a problem with all that (a trend continuing into OAV #3)-- and that's fine, it's all a matter of taste-- but the Tenchi series was cool and unique for its time because [like El Hazard] it went against the cliches of its genre with a good mix of humor thrown in. Now it just seems like another harem anime-- and not even a particularly creative one anymore (although the books help a lot in that regard, although I can't really count them; not being able to speak Japanese and all).

I've never heard of any Tenchi novelizations. Have a link or any summaries for me?

I don't put much stock in the Tenchi storyline-- they're all pretty muddled (even the ones like STM and TU that only had one anime each, plus a movie in TU's case); the OAV particularly so. It might help a bit to learn there was some attempt at clearing the mess up, heh.

uh buy... I'm lost.. What is going on so far?  :-X

Near as I can figure, Lan is chasing Jinnai III and his Bugrom through Floristica; unfortunately the bad guys have been wiping out palace security (I knew they should've invested in Atlas-- if it works for Jerry Springer, anyway :D). She's looking for the Princesses and... after that I'm not sure either. *chuckles* They're both MIA so far, I think.

Panic-- The above is where we're at now, heh. I don't remember this "jar" thing, but before that Kane and Xan had a duel which ended up with both of them banged up quite a bit (Kane went to the palace anyway along with Nolan and Miles; Xan went looking for a Phantom Tribe safehouse in Floristica and is currently being healed). That was a few posts' worth. *chuckles*

And those are really the highlights. The palace/Princess subplot is the main focus now.

Spoilers! :]

It's... different. Like GXP, the writers seem to be buying into the modern anime conventions/cliches more and more... and one of the big reasons the original OAVs were so unique and funny was because it was different from all that.

The best example is the villain (Kagato). Sure, he was a bishounen superpower with a cool voice; but there was a lot more to him than that. He didn't care about Tenchi (or any of them, besides the Juraians; which could get him to Tsunami). He was a scientist who played the organ. :D Kagato laughed at most of the anime villain cliches of the time and that still exist now; he was different, and he owned (and he remains the only person in the Tenchi continuities to overpower Tsunami).

Z, on the other hand; is cliche incarnate. He needs to prove his badness, so he lays waste to a fleet of ships-- without a ship of his own! (lol?) He's better than Tenchi... because he has five Lighthawk Wings! (ooh :|) And he has a "cool" one-letter name, and works for a mysterious being of cosmic power! (I quit.)

In #2, they bring back Airi from GXP (which was cool) and reference Seto (which was not). She was funny there-- she was the "battleaxe" female character to contrast to Airi and Misaki/Funaho. She had some cool moments, and her "fighting" wasn't too over-the-top.

Now all of a sudden "even Kagato is afraid of her?" Eh? This was before he attacked Jurai and plunded 3000-some-odd planets of their artifacts, right? And how even the GXP are afraid of facing him? Heck; Kagato thought so little of Jurai he sent his henchman (Ryoko) to deal with it.

I'm not harping on this because it involves Kagato (my favorite Tenchi character, and among my favorite villains); but because it's the most obvious example of history revisionism (which I was expecting, heh; but that-- and "Tennyo" or whatever her name is-- really stretch what little credibility the writers have left).

So far there's only been two episodes of the new OAV series, and I'm giving it time. But.... :[

Much as I hate to say it, I really think this is an "I'll tell you when you're older" moment. ;)

Being the stuffy Christian here I'm probably using some rep points for explaining this, heh; but here we go-- simply put, lesbian acts don't quite work the same way as heterosexual ones (for obvious physiological differences, heh). Think about where Fatora and the girl on the bed would be at in relation to each other if she was sleeping face-down on it.

Really, don't feel bad about not knowing-- by choice I didn't care to learn much about "alternative" (:| ...I'm not going to get into religious issues here, heh) forms of sex until I was a few years older than you are now anyway (and I imagine the same is true for most guys who don't watch/read smut). There's no shame in being ignorant about stuff like that.
