I'm guessing it's a wallpaper since you can faintly see desktop icons in the top left of the screen.

I would like a copy of that wallpaper if it's posted somewhere ;D

As for the "El-Hazard 2" thingie... I just assume it's a glitch, kinda like how Iffy shows up in the intro and box of the Alternative World series, but never actually shows in that anime. (Damn them!)

I thought the movie was pretty decent myself, though it has been a while since I've read the book, so I can't vouch for how accurate it is. Though the movie did have me laughing and remembering parts of the book, so it has to be at least somewhat accurate :P

Found this great video (~7.2 MB WMV file). Just click the link and it will send you to a page where you can right-click and hit "save target as" to save it.

Don't really want to describe it as it kinda gives it away, just that it is Nintendo Music  ;)

And if anyone could help me place what songs are from what games, I'd appriciate it (I know most, but not all of them).

Non-El-Hazard Topical Discussions / Mai-HiME
« on: April 12, 2005, 10:23:40 am »
Just finished watching the last set of episodes from this anime last night, so I can safely recommend it to everyone who likes action/comedy/romance/tragidy anime ;D

Scratch that... I highly recommend it.

Basic synopsis:

Mai and her brother Takumi are new students at Fuuka Academy (the school contains both middle-school and high-school). On the ship there (they chose to take a ship instead of other, faster means of travel) a girl is rescued from drowning who is holding a strange long sword. While the mysterious girl is recovering in the infirmary, a second girl shows up out of nowhere and starts a fight with the first girl. The new girl weilds twin mini-pistols and has what appears to be a robotic dog with twin cannons mounted on its shoulders. Mai gets caught in the fight between the two and the ship is destroyed (survivors are evacuated to life boats). Mai does not remember anything after falling into the water, but wakes up with the sword girl on the grounds of Fuuka Academy surrounded by smouldering grass.

Thus begins her discovery of her hidden powers, the powers of HiME, and the Orphans, which the HiME fight to defend the school.

The story is far from predictable and I wasn't sure how it was going to end until the very end. I will say that the ending resolves pretty much everything, but I will not tell you if the ending is tragic or not ;)

Plus my fav. composer, Yuki Kajiura, does the music for the series. ;D

I got my fan-subs from Static-Subs who have done a great job at translating the anime (other then translating the title as My-HiME for some reason :-/) It isn't licensed in the US yet, but I am hoping that someone does, and puts a good dub on it.

I'd jump in with more info except that the few El-Hazard AMVs that I have were all mentioned already ^^;

On a side note though, I usually go to Animemusicvideos.org to grab my music vids. (I have waaay to many AMVs ^_^V)

One thing I've recently seen (in the NGE manga published by Viz... second edition or something like that) is that they keep the original sound-effect artwork in Japanese, and then have a glossary at the back of the book with explanations as to what the sound effects are.

This annoys me to no end. With the NGE manga, I just now pretty much guess at a sound effect and read on instead of going to the work of looking it up in a large table in the back of the book (with small type also).

Couldn't they have at least put a note next to the panel as to what the sound effect is? It would only take a single word, or maybe a small sentance.

Just seems extremely lazy to me, and another reason I dislike so-called "authentic" manga. (Don't get me started on how Vis un-flipped Video Girl Ai mid-way through the series. The book quality now is worse then the originals.)

that the American comics industry ought to sit down and really figure out why manga sales are head-over-heels higher than DC or Marvel's output.

It's really a no-brainer. DC and Marvel only do one thing (at least in the casual person's eyes, like me): make superhero comics. There may be others, but I never see them.

I don't like superhero comics.

Manga gives me thousands of more choices. I can have "superhero" comics if I really wanted, but I can also have sci-fi, historical, some weird modern/historical hybrid, school romance, comedy, giant space battles, guys that inexplicably attract 10 females to live with him, and lots of other possibilities.

Is it any wonder I have a manga collection and not a single american comic? (I count Megatokyo as manga btw :P)

For those of you trying to keep up-to-date on the anime, Mara has finally showed in episode 11.

Being as Mara is one of my fav OMG characters and she has never been animated before (mini-goddesses doesn't count), I was estatic ^_^V

Nanaca Crash!

Can't really explain it, just go play. Quite addicting :P

(Instructions are in Japanese but the interface is in English. Should be relatively self-explanitory to play)

Well, episode 8 is Urd's debut. ^_^V And also includes a few quick cameos by Skuld, Ere, and Ex (I think Chrono was off camera because of the way the camera was angled)

And it looks like episode 9 is going to be Sayoko and Aoshima trying to find out Belldandy's "real" identity, including using the S&M club :P

Nice update on MWN, though I still think Peorth uses too much french-style english. She always struck me as throwing it in every once in a while on a couple of words, not as if she had a really bad french accent. But that may be just my recolletion, been too long since I read that segment of the OMG manga.

There is so many things wrong with that sentance grammatically that I can't tell if you did that intentionaly or not... >_> <_<  ;D

Well, I like the dub team for both the Movie and OVA, though having just one dub team for both would have been best.  ;D I have heard a rumour though that they are trying to get the Animego dub team (OVA VAs) though I don't know how true that is, or whether they will be able to get them. Oh, and apparently a certain group is still fan-subbing the series, but I won't post who until I confirm it and get permission from a admin to post that info.

Well, the series got licensed by, of all people, Media Blasters. Which means that fan-subs will be much harder to find now (Damn the MPAA and their wrongful suing of Suprnova). Also, because neither Pioneer nor Animego (if Animego is even still around) didn't pick it up, we'll probably have to have yet a 3rd set of voice actors for the OMG cast... *sigh*

Oh well, one can only hope this means that they will be bringing it to the US this year...

Here here spanner!

And the only reason I said the un-flipped manga seemed "cheap" was because DH has been flipping all of the OMG manga and replacing japanese sound effects since book 1. When the suddenly decided to "un-flip" the manga and not translate sound effects, it seems to me that they are simply trying to take the "faster-cheaper" route, which is highly disapprove of.

Of course this is all moot until I actually see the new manga format. But my argument still stands. Not to mention that I am still a bit peeved that I will have to re-buy the entire OMG manga series if I want them to look unified on my book shelf (same with Video Girl Ai). Almost enough to make a guy scream "money scam!" ;D

Oh, and a close second to outright replacing the japanese sound effects with english ones is putting small translations right next to the sound effect text in the panel . The times I've seen it done that way seem to work well, except that it obscures artwork a bit. If you're looking for an example, I think the Figure 17 manga uses this style of sound effect translation.

As for putting translations in the back of the book, well, why don't they just save themselves some time, print the manga in japanese, and put the translations in the back of the book? Would destroy the feel of the manga just as well. :P

Actually, the next OMG manga is already out, though I'm having a bear of a time finding it. Ended up ordering it online because my local bookstores seem to be behind in stocking manga (even though their manga section is 3 - 4 times as big as their comic section now). The only problem with it is that this is the last one that DH will be making flipped. From now on, all the OMG manga will be un-flipped, and divided up the same way as the Japanese manga. They will also not be replacing sound-effect artwork anymore and will be alternating re-releasing old books in the new format, and new books every 2-3 months. I like the faster release schedule, but the other changes irk me since it seems like DH is going for the "cheap" route with less work involved.

Other manga I've enjoyed includes El-Hazard (of course), Gunsmith Cats, Video Girl Ai, and Full Metal Panic.

Escaflowne and BGC 2040 are both good anime ;D (I do want to see the original BGC sometime, but since it was never finished I keep putting it off for other series)
