El-Hazard Online / Re: Unlikely Crossover(s)

For that matter, has anyone ever done any really weird crossovers with El Hazard (or would like to)?

If you count drabbles (100-word fan fiction), here's the El-Hazard cross-over/parodies I've done so far:  Ah! My Goddess (at least three times); Army Of Darkness; Better Off Dead (1980s movie); Excel Saga (that one was a given); Heinlein's "I Will Fear No Evil"; Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy; Marvin The Martian; Monty Python's Flying Circus; Peanuts; Pinky And The Brain; Ren & Stimpy; and Weird Al Yankovic's "UHF" movie.

And I've got a back-log of unpublished drabbles that covers American Pie, Love Hina, and The Matrix  :P

What, me, obsessive-compulsive?  (walks away, whistling innocently)

My AW ep 13 complaint list is still pretty much the same as the last time I replied to this topic, on another forum-- low production values, Afura's IQ dropping about 100 points, and Fatora and Alielle more-or-less raping Kauru.  Ick.  It's my least favorite EH anime.

Quote
So her little act in OAV2 where she directly grabs Nanami and is trying to force her there and immediately into sex wasn't? ;p

Well, in one case, you have a fully-clothed Fatora feeling up a fully-clothed Nanami, and Nanami is aware enough of what's going on to push Fatora away.  In the other case, you have a half-naked Fatora and Alielle, kneeling over a naked and wet Kauru (ugh, I'm getting too old for things like this), and Kauru is scared enough to scream.

Another thing that ick'ed me is-- why was I put off when Fatora and Alielle overpower Kauru, and Kauru screams, but it didn't automatically bother me when Deva has the bugs overpower Jinnai, and Jinnai screams?  I mean, non-consentual is non-consentual.  I shouldn't be entertained by either case.

El-Hazard Online / Re: El-Hazard Fanmap
« on: March 17, 2003, 10:04:06 pm »
One possible problem.  Kalia's tomb and desert-Ifurita's oasis are at opposite corners of the known world.  Could Jinnai and Kalia have traveled that far in OVA2?

Actually, that might be a continuity error in OVA2?  I guess, either Jinnai and Kalia had to travel a really really long ways, or Fujisawa was really really lost.

Other than that, it looks great.  You've obviously studied the hints at geography much more closely than I have.  I didn't even know a third of those names.

I saved the map for my own future use.  "Hana Ni Arashi" actually doesn't have much travel in it.  But if I ever get to my third serial, I'm gonna send Afura, Shayla & Kauru all over the place  ::)

Anyway, who here thinks they'll touch it at least with a 10 foot pole?  Any questions?

I'd like to, but first I have have to:
  • help my mother take care of my father's estate (including two farms full of junk);
  • get my own 2002 taxes done;
  • finish my "Hana Ni Arashi" fan fiction, which is shaping up to be a 85000+ word novel-length serial;
  • get a start on my third El-Hazard serial;
  • finally get the scanner fired up, and try my hand at some EH fan art;
  • learn a little more Japanese, and take another swing at lyric and manga translations.  I've got a really really really rough translation of Jinnai's song now, but I haven't posted it because I know it has mistakes;
  • and, start watching all my El-Hazard DVDs once every two months, instead of only two or three times a year.  Life is too short not to watch them more often.

I think I can fit you in sometime around 2008  :P  Not to poke fun at your work at all, but, yipe, I'm trying to do too much as it is.  I really would like to try it, sometime.

The only thing I don't believe I mentioned in the updates is that it should be completely user customizable; essentially, you can use the shell to create custom El-Hazard stories if you felt like it.

Actually, this interests me more than the original game.

I've thought of this link before, but I don't think I've posted it yet:

This is a web-based script engine, so it's apples and oranges.  There may be better examples of things like this, too.  Still, it'd be fun to have something like this with El-Hazard characters.

Deleted my previous post to this topic.  A little too far out there, for this forum, after I thought about it.  Shitsurei shimashita.   :-/

El-Hazard Online / Re: Post-Alternative World type Idea-esque Things
« on: March 11, 2003, 09:58:54 pm »
I'm sorry that I didn't get around to responding to the previous topic-- but I am so incredibly busy with other things, at the moment.  I probably won't get any more fan fiction written until June, the way things have been going.  I'm writing this now when I should be writing checks to pay my bills  :P

Since there doesn't seem to be a definitive map of the Alliance kingdoms, someone probably ought to draw a "fanon" (fan-canon) map, if they haven't already.  It'd be helpful for your project, and for future fan fiction projects.  FWIW, I've assumed/hoped that Roshtaria and Gannan shared a border in my fan fiction.

The only other (completely unhelpful) thing I have to say, after skimming this topic, is-- I'm pleased that I've worked out a back-story of my own for Kauru that I haven't seen anywhere else yet.  Now I gotta get "Hana Ni Arashi" written before someone else *does* come up with it.

El-Hazard Online / Re: Dubbed versus Subtitled El-Hazard
« on: March 11, 2003, 09:50:54 pm »
I watch sub much more often than dub, in general.  I'm a beginning Japanese language student.  Might go for JLPT 4 this year...

However, I usually watch my two favorite titles (EH OVA1 and Oh My Goddess! OVA) in English.  Go figure.

The OMG! dub is the only one that I like better than the original Japanese.  The brilliant voice actors, the little tweaks to match the lip flaps, the handling of bits of Japanese culture that Joe Sixpack wouldn't understand-- they caught lightning in a bottle there.

As far as El-Hazard-- OVA1 is a draw.  Some of the new jokes are brilliant, but some of them make me cringe.  For example, Jinnai's "time to energize my bunny demon" (I *hate* that line!!) and Fujisawa's "open bar", at the end of his dungeon scene, when he's obviously becoming physically sick at the idea of marriage.

And the English voice actors?  Most of them are perfect matches, and many of them surpass the Japanese VAs in places.  But-- Makoto's English VA doesn't work for me.  Either he was miscast, or he wasn't directed properly, or he misplayed the part, but he somehow makes Makoto sound much more uncertain of himself, even stupid in places, than the Japanese VA, to my ears.

OVA2 and Alt World-- sub is better than dub.  Fatora gets a few good lines in OVA2, but the rest is kinda bleah for me.

Wanderers-- Probably also a draw.  But I like Makoto's English VA much better in the Wanderers.  Again, go figure.

Are there any stories that just cling to the top of your head, that I really should read?

Let me state some very important disclaimers.

I haven't read at least a third of those stories myself.  Jason Youngberg's two serials and Liam Roy's "Somewhere In Between" are on my To Read list, among others, as I write this.

These are by no means the only ones I like.  I kinda hate to make a list, because there are so few EH authors, and I really don't want to put someone off by leaving their story out.

And, ask me tomorrow, and I'll give you a different list.  But that's always the case.  So, having said all that...

These are the two "big ones."  They're both essential reading.

El-Hazard: Earth by Ken Wolfe
The Shape Of Things To Come by Dookychan

I'd also recommend these, among others.

The Adventures of Alielle and Fatora by Dookychan
(everything by Eponymous)
Caryatid by Vince Seifert
Fault by Fish <-- I like this one too  :-)
How Fatora Stole Christmas (and Shayla-Shayla) by Taloon
Mortal Engines by Alan Harnum (incomplete, abandoned)
Nemurenai by Emily Siazon
No Thanks for the Memories by Seto of Jurai
The Princess B*%$# by Erin (The Princess Bride parody)
Pure by EmpressGalaxia (only one chapter, dang it)
The Tale Of The Jinniyah And The King by Vince Seifert
Wandering Souls by Spanner (again, only one chapter, dang it)

And these are probably the best of mine (plug, plug):

The Charm / Hana Ni Arashi (my two "straight" serials)
The Alternative Amuck (uneven, but I still like most of it)
The Angst
Fatora Saga (Excel Saga parody)
Jinnai And The Bug (Pinky & The Brain parody, sort of)
Mind Trip
The Reception
Sad Girls In Snow
Scary Campfire Stories
What's It Like

Skip "Damn, It's Hot" and "Where We Came In"-- those two are clunkers  :P

Oh, and should I test it enough and say that it's ready for some production work, then I would certainly enlist the help of any fanfic writers or at least heavy readers about the place.

I'm two for two   8)  I'm awfully busy in RL, with other things, but I'm interested.

El-Hazard Online / fan fiction links
« on: February 17, 2003, 10:11:00 pm »
Well, I've got minor writer's block.  More like writer's speed-bump-- I just haven't gotten around to taking some time out to do some brain-storming.  :P

So I updated this list instead.  It's complete now.

http://echoalpha.com/fanfic/ElHazard_links.html

148 stories.  That's pretty much everything I could find, via FF.net, Usenet and Google.  Did I miss any?

There are two missing stories-- "The Continuance" (missing from IMSA) and  "Nightmares End, Dreams Beginning" (NC-17 fic dropped from FF.net).  Are these publicly posted anywhere else?

El-Hazard Online / Re: EH Music Videos available online...
« on: February 17, 2003, 09:51:52 pm »
I found a good one yesterday.

http://www.indifferentproductions.com/AMVs/

Third one down.  Ren & Stimpy "Happy Happy Joy Joy" song.  It's just barely on-topic-- there's a clip of Jinnai and Groucho, and a Miz cameo.  But it's very very very funny.  The lip-sync is brilliant.

The Tenchi video, second one down, was very well done too.  I haven't DLed the others.
