I think I burned through Ken Wolfe's "Earth" series and "Reunited" in about that amount of time.  I found them to be enthralling reads.

well, there is the manga.  :|

Speaking of that, I just picked up the latest GN, _Sora Unchained_, today at B&N.  It's numbered 19/20, and is the last edition that will be released in "Westernized" format.  From now on, OMG! will be released as a translated edition of the original Kodasha "tankoubons" beginning with Edition 21 (the same number currently available in Japan.)

Apparently the Kodansha editions are all the same page count, unlike the Westernized ones.  Ours so far have been released around one continuous story arc.  Sounds like future ones will have uniform page counts irrespective of whether or not they end on a cliffhanger.  That's one thing I will miss about the Westernized editions, which will eventually be taken out of print.

Non-Westernized editions will be released for the orignal nineteen eventually.   No word yet as to whether the new editions will keep their Kanji sound effects or not.

The statement also goes on to say the loose-copy editions of the monthly comic will no longer be published.

While the new format will take getting used to, I was one of the original purchasers of the Neon Genesis Evangelion left-to-right reading manga Special Collector's Edition.  As we've mentioned here, in the years hence the "original" version has become the de facto standard.

Personally, I think this is a good move.  The popularity of manga and anime in the North American market has finally reached critical mass.  Why, even today I perused the manga aisle at B&N, knowing full well there was more manga there than I'll ever manage to read in my lifetime.  And more comes to these shores by the day.  Having something for everyone is truly a wonderful thing.

'Scuse me..gotta burn through this gem all in one go before wifey and I watch the final DVD of our Inu Yasha First Season TV box set.  ;)

Is Youngberg still on this list?  IIRC he put together a convincing Makoto costume, staff and all.

Then again, maybe you could just ask Jenny how she did it.

What my previous post has to do with the topic at large is this:  several, myself included, believe that if Hayashi animated the plot from Ken Wolfe's Earth series and released THAT as OVA3, the result would be satisfying and compelling.

But that is merely our humble opinion.  Read the story and judge for yourself.

I agree with you about AW I just found it alittle upsetting when I first watched the ovas to find that in the first one he is able to find her at the end but it didn't show how. Then in AW he still hasn't found her and is trying to still.  I guess I am just excited to see how they are reunited and perhaps they could go alittle further into there relationship alittle after they are runited.  but then again contuineing it like that could also ruin it.

Greetings, Vash-san.  Welcome to the forum.

I'm a big fan of the original OVA for many of the reasons you posit in this thread.  Shortly after I'd seen the OVA in its entirety, I learned of the existence of several fanficts specifically written to tie together these very plot threads.

Probably the biggest reason I'm an EH OVA fan is because of Ifurita and Makoto.  A friend and like-minded individual named Ken Wolfe also happens to be a pretty decent writer.  He took upon himself to create a wonderful continuation series in which we learn how Makoto and Ifurita were reunited, and how their life together unfolded amid the chaos of postwar Roshtaria.  The "Earth" and "Reunited" stories are some of the finest fict works I've ever read.  Perhaps you might enjoy them too.

Ken and I still correspond from time to time, as we created some additional EH works together.  He's spent time living in Japan, which helps make the "Earth" story in which Ifurita and Makoto return to Makoto's home country all the more credible and interesting.

Actually, this trend began with the Blood of the Immortal manga.  The author simply refused to permit his work to be "flipped."  But it wasn't until Viz started releasing the Evangelion manga in "special collectors edition" non-flipped format that the style really took off.  It's more of a sign of the times, not really being "cheap."  That's what the consumer market is buying these days because that's what the manga looked like when it was created.

I rather like the un-flipped manga myself.  It's how it was intended to appear in Japan, which I rather enjoy.  The art is original and non-touched.

Looks like that day is rapidly approaching.  (Adcock...special mention of Fruits Basket in the link below.)

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=1548&ncid=1548&e=2&u=/afp/20050131/lf_afp/afplifestyleusjapan_050131160526

Which, I believe, is a good thing.  Of course, I have quite a bit of material in my in-basket.  With all this material I've all but given up on being able to watch all of it during my lifetime.  :)

For anime, I am looking forward to watching:

Inu-Yasha (just picked up the 1st season box set)

Nadesico (borrowed from a friend)

BGC 2040 (also from a friend...watched original c. 1989 in college on a fourth-generation fansub...)

Escaflowne (watched some back in the day, looking forward to seeing it all now.)

Just finished the Crest of the Stars/Banner of the Stars manga.  Great stuff, highly recommended.  I wish Ono has illustrated the third book like he did the first two, however.  Just my preference.  I liked the way Ono drew Lafiel in a way that could appear hardened or softened as the situation predicated.

Managed to burn through Trigun Maximum's three volumes all in one go this weekend after collecting dust on my bookshelf for nearly six months.

And I'm keeping up on Battle Angel Alita Last Order.

Hey, Adcock...the next Oh My Goddess TP is due out this month, right?

Belated congratulations! :: thumbs up ::

Season's Beatings?!  ???

Morris can confirm that railroaders have a warped sense of humor.  It's a coping mechanism.

Phone's ringing...gotta trouble call to get to.  Damn!  Just as I was all hepped up to enjoy my latest manga haul.  Trigun Maximum #3, Banner of the Stars II (I want Ono back as the illustrator!) and Battle Angel Alita Last Order #4.  At least the tankoubons travel well.  :(   I'll have time to read them trackside while I'm waiting for the train dispatcher to issue me authority to work on the signal system to fix the damn problem I'm being called out to work on!  >:(

And that's why we need the coping mechanism.

Saw the first couple eps of Tylor.  Liked it.  I think Kathy's seen all of them; not sure about the remainder of the Showalter clan.

Nadia Secret of Blue Water is one of my all time favorites.  Got kinda campy in places, but the Gainax crowd just can't help themselves.  Even liked it better than Eva, having seen both--Nadia didn't get half as funky crazy weird as Eva did toward the end.

Plus Nemo's a dead ringer for Captain Gloval from the SDF-1.  Now THAT's "old school"!  ;)  I date myself there.

What makes this so damn WRONG is that I couldn't help but think of Maison Ikkoku as I read this one.  Recall how Kyoko is always rooting Godai on with his exams?  That is, when she's not pissed at him for Lord Only Knows.  Then again, anyone who's read the Game Set Match graphic novel knows there might be something to that...

At this point in my life, I'd settle for anything other than Encroaching Gray in my hair. Jeez, even my chest hair is turning silver.

I console myself by looking in the mirror and saying, "You know, it's very similar to George Clooney", but that just ain't cuttin' it one bit. :)

JSM

Be glad your hair is staying around long enough to turn grey, JSM.  Adcock has met me in RL, and it's becoming obvious my job requires I wear a hard hat all day.  >:(  They say one ought to look to one's maternal grandfather to determine the future for one's hair (or in my case, lack thereof.)  My grandfather was bald by the time he was 35, though he lived to be 98.  I'll take the longevity, thanks.  ;)

Anyone heading to the heartland heading for Anime Iowa in September?  I should have a weekend pass from my signal school in Kansas City so I'd like to attend.

And Monica Rial is one of my favorite VAs.  Her portrayal of Izumi in Princess Nine easily made her one of my all time favorite characters.
