"Yeah, Makoto, I've heard that you've had some PROBLEMS with your co-workers. And, uh, that's not GOOD. Um, yeah... see, Jinnai's going to be doing the same job as you are, so if you could, um, get along, that'd be GREAT. Yeah..."

Hey, good to see you again. :] How've you been? Any new anime to recommend (or warn against, heh)?

That avatar, though....  :|

Rob-- That'd be interesting. I could probably help out with a couple series that I have "collected" (>_>)-- I do a lot of writing these days, and some anime reviews/summaries/whatnot certainly wouldn't be unreasonable.

Yo. :] Always good to have someone new on board. Things are pretty slow anymore, though, but that's just how it goes sometimes.

And that's pretty cool. As for me, I found out about El-Hazard through some EH-based anime music videos, and I was curious about it and asked some of my friends (and out of around 20 only one had seen the series, heh). He recommended it so I downloaded the original series... and the rest is history, I guess.

As far as El Hazard goes, the original is still the best; but I sort of like The Wanderers TV series, too... not nearly as good, but not bad. I don't really care much for the 2nd OAV series or [especially] The Alternate World. :/

I'm guessing an anime-based P&P game, like BESM. (I-- a longtime D&D player-- recently got into BESM d20 for some online IRC-based games with some friends, and it's actually pretty interesting. Not exactly balanced, but I digress....)

That's an interesting concept, Nirvana; have you written any of it yet? :]

---

Since we're sharing, I guess it wouldn't hurt to toss this in....

I don't write fanfiction anymore, but I used to; and after getting into El-Hazard I'd thought about writing something for it, too. The idea never got off the ground, but in concept it was fairly epic... some sort of plot that basically tied most of the series together.

Like there were multiple active demon gods (the ones from the manga, the three Ifuritas, etc.), and they fought each other a lot. [Since my style focuses a lot on action sequences, there'd have been a lot of them.] The Shadow Tribe was a more entrenched [and dangerous] enemy; more of a three-way war with the Alliance and the Bugrom (more like the manga, again). There were four Priestesses (Ishiel-- from the game-- and Miz were to be sort of a love triangle with Fujisawa for some requisite comedy), and Shayla, Qawoor, and Nanami were rivals for Makoto instead of one of the Ifuritas or Rune... sort of new. Cretaria was a neighboring kingdom instead of another world completely. The "dark technology" of the ancient El-Hazardians was more unified; Arjah-- the "main villain," one could say-- for example, was a demon god whose unique power was to counter the Eye of God (and it was Kalia who could control it, instead of OAV Ifurita), etc.

I still have some ideas in my mind for it, and on some level it might be fun to actually write it some day and try my hand at making the setting and characters actually make sense (something the staff was clearly unable to do with TAW :[ ) in a unified story, but... probably not. Once every couple weeks I'll still see a scene in my mind's eye (like a Shadow Tribe assassin sent to kill Yuba [or whatever he was called], which ends with him using technology against Ifurita, an obviously much more powerful being), but it's seldom anymore. Too many other things to do. *chuckles*

Ah... anyway. I guess that ramble was just to say that there's nothing wrong with thinking about adding to the "canon" of something you like, and that you're in good company. ...or something. :]

Technically 14 months, I think, but close enough. >_>

We had a competition here some time ago; where folks picked their ten favorite anime series and then Saucer tallied them up. El-Hazard winning was no surprise to anyone here, I'm sure; but some of the other choices were series that [at the time] I had never heard of-- like Azumanga Daioh-- or never watched (like Evangelion or Ranma 1/2).

Well... things change a lot in a year [or 14 months :P]. Think about it as kind of a "then and now" experiment... talk about how your picks then were different from what they would be now-- if we had a competition this year, say-- and why.

I mean, here's my list, as of May 2004:

10. Full Metal Panic
09. Gundam [Wing]
08. Rurouni Kenshin
07. Ah! My Goddess [OAV]
06. Love Hina
05. Tenchi Muyo!
04. Bubblegum Crisis (Tokyo 2040 only)
03. El-Hazard (TMW/Wanderers only)
02. Crest/Banner of the Stars
01. Inuyasha

At that point I had only seen half of FMP! (12/24 episodes), hadn't seen the ending of BGC Tokyo 2040 (I think I was at #18 or something), and hadn't seen quite a few others.

Here's what my list would be now:

10- Crest/Banner of the Stars
09- Chrono Crusade
08- Rune Soldiers
07- Irresponsible Captain Tylor
06- Ah! My Goddess (OAV/TV)
05- Full Metal Panic! (includes Fumoffu, without T2R)
04- Tenchi Muyo! (includes Magical Project S)
03- Martian Successor Nadesico
02- Azumanga Daioh
01- El-Hazard (TMW only)

Five of those are completely new (Azumanga Daioh, Nadesico, Tylor, RS, Chrono Crusade), and my old #1 slot was knocked completely off (due to Rumiko Takahashi's typical "the plot must never move" style making Inuyasha unbearably boring), and #2 was blown back to #10. BGC had a wretchedly poor ending, and the Love Hina anime simply doesn't hold the charm it once did.

And instead of it being a challenge to think up ten spots, there were a bunch scraping the bottom of the list-- Love Hina, Fullmetal Alchemist, s.CRY.ed and Grenadier all being somewhat enjoyable in their own rights; and that's just a small sample-- this time.

The one trend that didn't change was that I seem to prefer older anime that I "discover" to newer ones that just come out... the only anime made in 2004/2005 on the list was the Ah! My Goddess TV series, and that's still #6; and I think Chrono Crusade (might've been late 2003, though). There's also quite a mix of comedy, drama, and action up there; no one genre really stands out [the total absence of "psychological"/mind-trip anime is a noted and deliberate lack, though, heh].

Again, it's really interesting how "the list" changed in the last year or so, mostly due to word-of-mouth recommendations of anime (since our anime club tended to play anime I didn't like (the only series it played that I was interested in at all was Gungrave; the rest were CLAMP bits like X and Chobits or "mind-trip" attempts of Soultaker, Paranoia Agent, etc.)) from folks online.

Anyway... how about the rest of you? How have things changed... or not? :]

Most of what I know about anime comes from word-of-mouth. In general my online friends find out about new series through websites and download them before they're licensed via Torrent providers (I use Direct Connect; not a fan of BT), and spread the word as to how they like them. I'm not nearly as big an anime fan as most of them, so I pretty much only download good recommendations.

The rest of it comes from reviews on websites like this one; I checked out the new Ah! My Goddess TV series only after a thread popped up on EHOL about it, and a Final Fantasy forum I used to frequent has a pretty busy anime forum (which is where I got the tip about the new Full Metal Panic series).

Speaking of EHOL and spreading the word, that gives me an idea for a thread....

[But yeah, sorry I can't help any more than that. :/]

El-Hazard Online / Re: Jinnai Cosplay Help!
« on: July 14, 2005, 02:04:29 am »
You could carry a Bugrom plushie or something around with you (particularly if you have one of the little messenger Bugrom that appeared a few times). I mean, that way; the people that recognize it will know you're Jinnai, and the people that don't wouldn't know who you were anyway.

Besides a "prop" like that, though... I don't know. You could prominently carry a comb in your front pocket (helpful if you can get your hair to look like his), and that might help, but honestly; there's so many white guys in business suits (not so many that are blue, but still) in anime that you're really out of luck. *chuckles*

Now that is awesome. :D Nicely done, Daguru.

...and that reminds me; I'd completely forgotten about the 10th Anniversary stuff over the last few months... despite it being mentioned in multiple places on the site. :/

El-Hazard Online RPG / Re: *OOC* Comments and Questions
« on: May 17, 2005, 06:49:39 pm »
I'm a huge fan of D&D, and I agree-- a "game" format keeps peoples' interest and attention much longer than a round robin-style "mass fanfiction" thing does* (the only one I've ever seen be halfway successful was the one right here on EHOL-- and even then it ended with only a few active people posting). The only problem is that many times the people interested in writing online aren't into gaming; and people that are into P&P gaming don't do so online (there is a sizeable minority of folks who play by e-mail or via IRC, though; this is true).

So while I would certainly be up for this (assuming we get a good system going-- BESM would be much more accurate than D&D, but I don't have any of the books in that system), I don't know how many other people would be. A lot of the old writers in the RP here are no longer active, for one thing.

*For example, I participate in "Survivor"-style writing tournaments in which a host writes a story, and a bunch of people "sponsor" characters from video games or anime [or whatever else the host allows] to join in. During the course of the game (typically divided into 7 rounds) the sponsors use "votes" or abilities to eliminate one another, until the final round, and ultimately one person wins.

They're reasonably entertaining, and we have some coming up in the summer. If you (Life Matrix; or anyone else) is interested, I can expound on it more. In any event, the main website for Survivors is Random Insanity (particularly these two forums); the most recent one took place here. It can seem kind of odd or intimidating at first, but one gets used to it in time. (I'm running one of these tournaments myself in December, which will allow anime characters; if it's OK with Rob, and assuming there's still active people at EHOL by then, I'll probably advertise for it here later.)

I've done some texture work before (in WarCraft 3), and some very minor 3D model editing. But actually making a mesh is well beyond my level of expertise (and capabilities-- I don't have any 3D modeling programs anymore, and I don't feel like pirating one, heh). The number of people able and willing to make a mesh of a semi-obscure anime character like Ifurita for free is probably very low, heh... if there were any other 3D meshes for Ifurita already made for a different system that could just be converted to Freedom Force (which I can't do; I don't have the game) that would probably work best... but I don't know if there are any.

Non-El-Hazard Topical Discussions / Re: Nintendo Music
« on: April 20, 2005, 01:58:36 am »
Right... it opens with the classic Mario 1 theme, then one of Dr. Mario's tracks, then something I can't place, then one of Tetris's tracks, then Mortal Kombat's "fight theme" (from the first movie, I think, actually-- I don't know if the games actually used it), then the theme from Zelda 1, and it's wrapped up with some closing music from Super Mario World [I'm pretty sure]. They play the Starman music (when one guy is running around knocking the other people down) from the classic Mario games, and the "dungeon" music from the original Mario game too (the piece that starts off with one guy on the right "singing" it).

I might've gotten Tetris and MK backwards in terms of placement-- when they're singing and a guy dressed like a ninja comes out, that's Mortal Kombat. :D Also, I'm not sure if there is any difference between Dr. Mario and Tetris... it sounds different, but I can't tell.

El-Hazard Online / Re: Conversation with Associate; OAV3, EHOL

I guess in the absence of any news about the rumored El-Hazard continuation, we're talking about this? *chuckles* Cool....

Good to see you, Ken. I don't read much fanfiction any more, but I'll probably check out yours once I have some time. Good EH stuff is always welcome, heh.

As for me, while TMW (the first OAV series) was easily my favorite, it wasn't really because of the Makoto/Ifurita relationship. I liked both characters (until Shayla started to grow on me, Ifurita was actually my favorite, largely because of the remarkably believable change her character goes through, coupled with the "coolness" factor she has), though. And that's really it-- I liked El-Hazard for its characters (especially the comedic situations) and backstory (a pretty solid one, given how little time the show had to work with) more than anything else.

TAW was bad because it ruined both-- the once-loved cast mostly became caricatures of themselves, and by the time that problem started to recover the show had hit a pretty long series of plotholes that messed up the rest of it. I did like The Wanderers-- though a disappointment compared to the original, it wasn't bad by any means.

So yeah, that's about where I stand on things. Not that anyone cares; just to contribute to the discussion, heh.  -_-

« on: March 05, 2005, 05:22:17 pm »
Anyone else feeling a little disappointed by this series? :/ I mean, with a few episodes exempted, it's been very slow and not really all that funny... like character development extended way too long (since we all know Keichi's a wimp who doesn't finally make a move until like halfway through the manga or something). There's been some good points-- I like this version of Sayoko a bit more than her two-dimensional manga portrayal (though conversely we have Aoshima, who's much worse... eh), but....

Episode 8 just about killed me. I mean, for the last two episodes it's all "Just a little bit longer until Urd shows up...", and then, once she does; she's like completely toned down from the manga. (Except for her outfit... wow. :o ) She goes from seducing Keichi and lying to/hypotizing him to... trying to mind control him to go after Belldandy? Um... yeah....

Since I know Peorth won't be showing up for like thirty episodes or something I might give this show a few more-- maybe see what they do with Skuld, and if it has some more humorous stuff-- and if it doesn't get better... well, there is the manga.  :|

(Well, OK, I'm lying. I'll probably keep downloading it until it gets a lot worse. But I'm no longer quite so uncertain about that possibility.  -_- )

Yeah, by the end of it, we lost both mods and all but a handful of the active posters (where did Exe go, anyway? :-/). The RP was a fun little exercise, yeah, but I don't see it working with so few participants left.

(Unless we were going to do something like the "Round Robin," but that was a little too wacky even for me, heh!)

I appreciate you good people telling me about this series, since I would've had no idea otherwise. *chuckles* Guess I'd better start looking for episodes (and better start hoping they label them differently so I don't confuse them with the OAVs, heh)! :]
