Title: El-Hazard Cosplay?
Post by: dooky on November 17, 2003, 07:51:38 am
Anybody here ever tried this? It seems that next summer, I'll finally get to go to a con, and I'm in a cosplayin' mood. And the character I want to cosplay as is...

(pause for effect)

(realises that everyone has already guessed)

Yeah, Fatora. Not Makoto dressed as Fatora, but actually Fatora (there is a subtle difference ^_^) I have 9-10 months to make a costume, which might seem like a long time... but you see, I don't have that much sewing experience. My qualifications in the subject amount to basic plushie engineering and making some Azumanga daddy hats to promote our anime club. I've never sewn actual clothes before, so this is going to be one hell of a challenge ^_^

Incidentally, the one I've chosen is the mostly blue one from OAV1 (probably harder than the green one, sadly ^_^). I might also cheat and throw in one of the hats from the other costumes, to disguise the fact that I don't have Fatora's fringe. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone on the forum had anecdotes to share about costume-making. Alternatively, you may have just lost all respect for me ^_^

Most people already know my sister Sarah pulled off OAV Ifurita once.

I still think she should've taken off her glasses, at least for the pictures; they're a tad distracting... but anyway.  It was pretty slick, but I don't know the development details.  She did have a friend at college who was good at sewing, so you may not get any actual help there.

If I'd be more feminine and/or more cute, then I'd do IFurita right away, including anything, and not worry about anything. Alas, I am not. Which sucks.

I even had detailed sketches once. But well...yes, my gender is nasty =/

Thats the only char I'd have interest in in El Hazard. The only other I could cosplay would be Makoto as Fatora or Fatora herself. Anyone else would be too...odd. XD My hair won't work with that and theres no way I'd cut it. ^^ ever.

As for respect - nah, normal =) Did Ukyo once *smiles* So I don't think its that special XD
Only thing you really have to pay attention to is the cut. You can so easily mess up horribly nnd only notice when sewing everything together. Ie: Work totally crap, failure. =/

In my highschool years, I was a dead-on clone of Jinnai. The hair, my physique, my demented and cruel persona... EVERYTHING was spot-on.

Unfortunately, my college years have not been kind to me. I have bulked up, my physique became to manly, and my impressive bishonen face makes too many of the opposite gender fall into lust-enduced comas. Alas, I long for the days of my high school years...

Everyone's a critic :p

Anyhow I modified that outfit a tad later, adding the blue stripes to the sleeves... they are missing in that version of the outfit (I ran out of time).

Anyhow, in college my friends and I liked to make cosplay outfits for the hell of it (and for cons). Gina was the only one with mad sewing skills. So the rest of us had to get REAL creative. So our solution was to hit the local Salvation Armys and scope out anything that we could use to turn into an outfit. Prom dresses are like gold. My Ifurita outfit was made out of a prom gown that I carefully hacked apart. The light blue trim, veil  and long light blue wrist drapes were all part of a night gown.

I also have a Duo Maxwell and outfit that was made in a similar manner ^_^ Modifying stuff works pretty well if you're creative with it. I mean if your character wears a t-shirt why re-invent the wheel? My Enzan Injuin outfit was easy to make too since the only thing I really had to modify was that weird ass black midriff he wears over his yellow shirt 9_9

You don't always need to be able to sew either ^_^; If you run short on time, hot glue and stitch witchery work wonders ^_^ (Especially on annoying little things like hems).

I'd like to make a Sapphire (Princess Knight) outfit over the summer... *sigh* I need to find out if there is a good thrift store in Guam... I also need to find out where the nearest fabric shop is... If I knew that I could start it now... But I have a sneaky feeling it'll be my summer project.

The story of the infamous Ifurita costume is revealed! ^_^ That was a cool costume. Maybe next time you could accompany it with some M4YH3M? ;D

Hey, for Sapphire all you need is some dental floss for the outfit and a fancy ornamental garbage can for the headpiece and....... ooohhhh you mean Princess Knight whoops.  ;D

Here are the best El-Hazard cosplay pictures I've found, I think.  The costumes are excellent, the gal doing TV-Ifurita is perfectly kawaii, and the guy is practically a real-life Jinnai.  Direct links to JPEGs seem to be disallowed, so scroll down to "Ifurita" on this page:
Cosplays da Aino (http://hamlet.tripod.com.br/cosplay.html)

EDIT:  Deleted some poorly worded pointlessness  :P

:o

Which is why I am NOT doing Marine Express Sapphire ^_^;

I also kinda wanna do Rockman EXE (cos he's shaped more like a normal person -- Rockman outfits are hard to do :p  )

Just to be difficult I think it'd be hilarious if someone tried to cosplay Gyroman. They'd have to turn sideways to get in doors and shit! I'd be half tempted to do that for sheer shock value. I think it needs to be on my list of stuff to do before I die.

I'd also like to do princess Zelda someday... but I'd want to make all her jewelry ^_^ I could soooo do that too ^_^ ... now to obtain some brass, solder and an acetelyne torch...

Guys doing Fatora sounds like fun...

Not for Fatora ^_~
(sorry, couldn't resist)

I think I'll be okay, since I'm quite feminine-looking and have a similar figure to Fatora (minus the boobage, but there's ways around that). Also, one of my friends is a cosplay veteran... I'm currently trying to talk her into going as Shayla.

I'm mindful of those horrible pictures you ocasionally see in Newtype of eighteen-stone men cosplaying Sailor Moon. I'm reasonably sure I can pull this one off, though...
Title: Re: El-Hazard Cosplay?

And why wouldn't it work? I know a male "fatora", and few actually noticed. In addition, I know of a male TV Ifurita, and he didn't seem overly manly. The pic was on a certain ML so long ago, and it looked fine ^^

So generally I think its totally fine. Unless, of course, you are said 18ton bearded guy with hair all over his body. Thats ridiculous, but that person isn't paying attention and/or doing effort, but doing it as a total joke - an overdone joke, I must add. But other than that...there are people cosplaying as espers, dragons, pokemon - so why not a guy who pays attention a girl? Doesn't seemso nasty to me. As said, would I actually be more cute, then I'd try it like that myself - and you CAN appear more feminine if you use makeup. Which I have never gotten myself, so don't ask me.

Due my behaviour quite some random people think I'm female anyway. "nono, let the young lady pass first"

"I think its your job" (Male person at airport to female person, on the subject of checking for nasty mean weapons on me)

XD So, really. I don't see the problem. Gender roles are funny anyhow XD
And I really need to find a way to shrink a few inches and seem cute otherwise. -.-'

However...

Fatora: "Ohoho. See, even these stupid earthlings have noticed MY beauty!" *goes towards dooky*
"Look Alielle. Like this one!" *glomps dooky, who most likely will not resist*
"Hey...something is...squishy..."

XD Yes, its a lame alternative world joke. Sue me XD

Oh, but it'd be worth it, despite the inevitable bad hurting that would follow ^_^

Hands up who thinks Alexei should cosplay as TV Iffy? It could work. As you said, it's usually about the amount of effort put into the costume. Obviously there's a point at which it becomes completely unfeasible... but if you're feminine enough to be mistaken for a girl occasionally, then you shouldn't have too much of a problem...

Of course, the benefit to cosplaying Fatora is that most of her costumes (with one or two memorable exceptions) don't show too much in the way of boobage, so the fact that I'm breastless doesn't really amtter, and a bit of padding should do the trick. TV Iffy's costume does show a bit of cleavage, but I think it's still do-able. I know of a guy who cosplayed as Naga from Slayers, with a surprising amount of success o_o

And now, a shameless request... I'm looking for pictures of my costume. I've gone via the usual routes, and I've found some... aside from OAV1 screenshots, I've found the original costume design and a few artbook pictures on this site, plus the paper doll thing. These should be enough, but if anyone happens to have any more, it'd be helpful. Just so you know, this is the costume worn by fatora in episode 7 and Makoto in episodes 5 and 6- mostly blue jacket, over a green top and pale green trousers/skirt hybrid thingy.

Actually, as far as boobage goes, Fatora's one of the most modestly-endowed anime women I've seen. (Which is fine by me - I've never been one to be attracted to the huge, bouncing, spine-shattering melons that seem to be the industry standard in anime -_-.) Probably part of the reason Makoto can impersonate her so easily. There's been debates, I know, as to whether they look alike because Makoto is effeminate or Fatora is manly, but really, I think it's a little of both.
Title: Re: El-Hazard Cosplay?
Post by: dooky on November 19, 2003, 11:41:14 am
I think Fatora's breast size is controlled by the same magical force responsible for Alielle's fluctuating age. OAV2 is the only time we see Fatora naked for any length of time, and at that point she seems to be about as blessed as Alielle in that particular department. But in Alternative World, they seem noticeably bigger (leave it to a Fatora fan to notice these little differences ^_~). I know, it's just different artists asserting their individuality, but it still means that I don't have much of an idea of how big they should be.

I could quite justifiably omit them completely... but somehow, that seems like a bit of a cop-out. And I just know that one of my friends in particular would never forgive me if I did that ^_^
Title: Re: El-Hazard Cosplay?
Post by: tvifurita on November 19, 2003, 12:27:39 pm
Breast size B should be fine for Fatora. ^^
Atleast thats what I think. Size A won't do her much justice.(obviously, in comparison, every other female has around DDDDDDDDD, but oh well. Anime bust sizes are a mystery. Ther ewas one anime which had the main character knock over a couple of books because her breasts were so big. I would find that scary. It was shown in the AMV mocking 'fanservice'

Faking that while showing no skin is easy, B isn't that big. Tho, however - I did never notice she had a different cup size in TV2. Must be because I don't look at that, unlike a certain someone I won't mention. XD
in your case, I'd definitely pick OVA2 - that way, you escape the taint of TV2 AND have it easier. Sounda great to me =P

Ahem.

And as for me - nah. Its probably solely because of my hair and the fact that I have no beard and tend to talk pretty high for some reason(much merriment at school on my cost, whee!). Males don't have long hair and no beard after all ^^

As said: I'd wish I'd be feminine enough to do that. But to actually be, I'd probably have to hunger myself way below the male average(She is skinny), and then learn how to properly do makeup, which, just as that, would be quite troublesome.

However, as for Ifuritas bust -> while she is showing skin, I know that there is a way to fake that. I am not exactly sure about it, I'd just have to check some sites if I really wanted -that-. Latex can do anything these days, from terrible wounds to completely alien faces. Breasts are pathetically easy in comparison.

The biggest problem would thus not be the actual costume(most of it is actually very easy, as said, I was pretty mfar in planning it - alot of it can actually be bought and modified, just take her trousers), but to avoid freaking out everyone I know ^_^' Say, I'd go to Ayacon with that costume. Now, what would, say, Tsukasa say about it =D
THATS the problem at the entire thing ^_^' Since In iffys case, I'd have to be serious about her, to do her justice. I'd hate to mess her up, of all characters.

Only female I ever got across well was Ukyo from Ranma. That was on a german con, though, and she hardly required any makeup at all since I did an earlier form of her. ^^ I fared surprisingly well in our lil Ranma group.

Cosplay?

Man, I haven't thought about that in a while...

Now, for the dirty secret... Yes, I used to do it, a bit.  ^^;

Unfortunately, I really haven't done anything new in recent times, mainly becuase I found I enjoyed making the costumes more than I did wearing them, and unfortunately, making costumes isn't something I have any time to do anymore (and my way of costume making usually involves power tools and several days in the good sunshine.)

Anyway, I haven't pulled these out in a couple years, but I did do a couple of El-Hazard cosplay projects...

My first Makoto Costume, with my friend Jenny as Iffy...

http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-7/307931/makifu2.jpg

My second Makoto costume.  In a bit of tongue-in-cheek good humor, I finally answer the question as to why Makoto has all those far-off gazes in the later series...

http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-7/307931/realreasonMakotohasthosefarofflooks.jpg

Just what was he thinkin' about...

*looks over old pics*  Geez, man, I can't imagine myself without the beard and short hair.  They almost feel like another person posed for these pics.

As to pertaining the topic at hand, to all the aspiring cosplayers thinkin' about joining that new generation of cosplayers...or somethin'...

Just have fun with it.  Don't obsess with body images and the such.  It ain't gonna happen, and as long as you like the character, why should anyone else's opinion matter.

It's called CosPLAY, so have fun with it. When I was doin' it, I did and when it stopped being fun for me, i stopped. No biggie.  I have a lot of fun memories, plus a whole stack of celebrity photos of people I met as Makoto...

Happy sewing...

After all the innuendo I've written in the round robin, I can't believe I left myself wide open like that  :P

More seriously, just to be clear, I didn't mean to poke fun at scruffy or heavy-set people doing cosplay (I'm a scruffy heavy-set guy myself), or at men doing cross-cosplay (they've got more gattsu than I've got).  It's just that the fictional character of OVA-Ifurita is rather dear to me, and seeing a scruffy heavy-set guy portraying that particular character, even in good clean fun, did unpleasant things to my brain  ^^;

Yeah, I was friends with her.  Unfortunately, I haven't spoken to her in quite a while.  I don't do cosplay that much and we pretty much attended different cons.  Que Sera Sera.  It happens.

She was one of the biggest perfectionist cosplayers I ever met.  Fangs and cat contacts... yai!

Gosh-shucks.  Yeah, the OVA 2 outfit will always have a fond place in my heart as the costume that made Rio Natsuki squeal in delight.

True Story.

The Jason school of CosPlay, where the philosophy is "What you lack in sewing skills, make up for with large encumbersome props that easily overshadow the costume."

Ahh, memories... Mostly of lumber and lots and lots of spraypaint.

Never, in 15 years?

Damn, either you have been to very, very small cons, or you've been turning around at all the wrong moments.

Geez, just from the group of my friends who've done El-Hazard cosplay at multiple cons I can count on 2 hands...

Lessee... 3 Makotos, a Jinnai, a Shayla, an Alliele, a Nanami, A Fatora, An Ifurita, 2 Fujisawas...

Now, if I were to count every El-Hazard cosplay from just random people I saw over the last 7 years... hmmm...

Yeah I have a lot, but they really need rescanned because I scanned them poorly a long while back when my computer skillz were not as mad.

However, the biggest archive of cosplay photography has to be Kivin Lilliard's page at http://www.fansview.com

Seriously, there are tons of El-Hazard cosplayers to be found there.  Best place to start would be between 1998 - 2000 when the most people were doing  that series.

Yep, yep.

As for cons, I pretty much have cut my number to about 1, maybe 2 a year and then only smaller cons like Ikasucon, Ohayocon, Sugoicon, etc.  I only did one this year and that was mainly to see some old friends and help them out.

I've never sewn actual clothes before, so this is going to be one hell of a challenge ^_^

Well, said convention has been and gone. And, well...

That's me, that is. (http://www.egrnet.com/users/jthrussell/files/amecon2k4/P8210002.JPG )

Well, it's not the best picture, but for a first cosplay attempt I think it went quite well. The strange thing was how I bumped into two other Fatoras there (albeit in different outfits). I really wouldn't have thought she was such a popular choice for cosplaying.

My next attempt? Well, I'm not sure when my next con will be, but I have been invited to go to AX in the the US at some point in the future, provided I can afford the plane fare. If I do go, I am apparently obliged to make this costume. (http://www.dreamsofpurity.com/Sailor%20Scouts/Neptune/neptune_holdingmirror.jpg)

Wish me luck...

Er... Well... What to say...

I was afraid to click that link. I really was. My previous experience with Crossplayers has been... so-so, at best. (Man-Faye... *Shudders*)

This wasn't too bad, though - the outfit was expertly done, and slapping a man's head on top of it wasn't OVERLY offensive. Especially since I was well-used to seeing Makoto's mug in that very same place.

Oh, and be sure to let us know when you finish that Sailor Neptune outfit! It'll be nice to know the exact day, hour, minute, and second that my loss of faith in humanity becomes complete. ^_^V

Well, what about Man-Yuna from TechTV's X-play   XO ? I thought that "thing" is freaking scary! I swear, some people's passion for FFX's Yuna or female characters in general is just touching the edge of sanity...  :bawl

*back to normal*
Damn. My Groucho's taking longer than I expected. My strive for perfection is time-consuming, but that's cosplay for yah.
