Title: Ah, the site's 1st year...

The Good

Well, folks, it's been a year.  And a helluva year so far as personal changes in my life go.

What started off as a simple little mostly-text site with great ambition and little following between two guys who fought bitterly with each other in a previous life blossomed into a more intricate array of not just information, but also apparent passion from some of those who've been deticated and yet lost on the internet.

I hope to keep this place active and alive for as long as possible... I dread the thought of ever becoming like so many of the Geocities and Tripod El-Hazard sites out there... "Last Updated xx/xx/98" (or as late as 2001).  "Last" update indeed.  :(

The Community

I don't know many of you to any personal degree.  And I also must admit its somewhat sad that many of you are only recent members.  I don't know if there's anyone besides my brother, sister, and Neil who've come to this place continually since it first opened with its little amount of info back in May of last year.  As far as I know and "Spring Cleaning" seemed to prove, there's virtually no one, or at least no one who cares enough to let me know about it.

At least I can faithfully say that many of you who have been around as of late have been cream of the crop so far as fans can go.  Mark, Saucer, MrWhat, Dooky, Jewel, Rowan, Baka-sama... these are just some of the names I often look forward to seeing a forum post made by, because I know they can give me honest and thoughtful answers when discussing El-Hazard "fact".  But this isn't to put down the others either, because it's a variety of people who make up a community.  It's probably mostly the doping effects of the somewhat depressed mood I'm in that I'm not thinking of more.  ;)  (In order of "Top Posting" (http://www.el-hazardonline.net/cgi-bin/ehol/YaBB.pl?board=;action=mltop) it's actually Saucer, MrWhat, Mark!  Saucer's in 2nd at the moment.  Only half-way to the top Saucer, Lar's holding first. ;D)

The Bad

Money.  I have approximately $1500 now.  When the check clears at CCAC, I'll be down to about $500.  With books averaging a rediculous $300 all together, I'm down to $200.  Seems okay, right?  Well, my internet costs are $50/mo, not counting any renewals on domains/etc I might have coming up.  Keep in mind its my internet service that powers this place.

Obviously I need employment.  And right now it's not looking good.  I started early this month at the top with hope, and yesterday hit McDonalds with the stabbing pain of anxiety and defeat.  My dad rags me daily with all these ideals and ideas about getting employed, but lately I feel like there's not even a remote chance I'll end up with a job I like... if a job at all.

The idea is, be patient with me; until I'm successfully and securely employed, I'm liable to be shoved out the door every day applying here, there, anywhere.  This makes me grumpy, tired, depressed, and, of course, unable to update or do things for the site as frequently as I'd like.  I'm personally surprised I ever managed to get the site upgraded like I wanted to.  (Fortunately, my experience and working with already developed routines for things made it fairly easy, albeit requiring a short shutdown.)

(So, yeah, Saucer, about all the bitching I did about the thing... sorry about that.  I'm just too irritated that I'm not in the least thinking about things in proper proportions, if that makes any sense.  :P)

Anyway, well, this is my problem to deal with right now, but I'm just keeping you informed in case it becomes your problem somehow.

Other than that, thanks guys, you really make this worthwhile!  And I mean that.  Because despite feeling defeated and disrespected for all the talent I have by the job market and even my own dad, you guys and this place are the one thing that I am truly proud to be a part of, and will continue to build and nuture this place as long as I possibly can.

That's about all for me tonight.  Hopefully slothful ol' Neil actually will have something for us, if he doesn't already.  ;)  'Till next time...

P.S.  The little drawings used in this thread are my sister's one friend's.  Cute things.  I keep forgetting to put them up.   :-[

Hey bro i know i dont post much but I'm sorry to hear about all the hard times you've been having...sucks with teh economy the way it is, a lot of my comp sci friends who are graduating this year are in the same predicament, employment for us comp sci guys hasn't been this low since 1989....:(  but i really do hope things do get better for you and keep your head up, you'll pull through this one, we're all here for you in whatever ways we can.  Good luck.

Don't even trip about it! It's all good.

I'm glad this place has lasted as long as it has. No doubt, due to j00r single-minded dedication! Most places on the net don't last very long. Even some of the greatest messageboards and/or sites fall for one reason or another. I think we have a great little community. And, I certainly hope we're able to say the same thing next year at this time! I've met some cool people and had quite a few laughs.

And speaking of bakasam, I wonder what he's up to these days? I haven't seen him around since March.

I know it sucks when you're looking for a job and it just isn't coming through. I had the same probelm a couple years back. You can pull through it though. There will always be jobs that need to be filled. People don't stay in job forever. Especially summer jobs. People just flake out, so something could pop up any time. I'm only being cheery and optomistic because it's happened to me before so I know what you're going through.

Well, what did we say about similarities between us?

I have the same problem right now, although it isn't that hard as your seems to be. I have to pass by the time until I can begin my studying. Also I even don't know what or where to study properly! I have to find a good and nice job for about half a year (and not to forget, a good college!) . But here in germany the situation isn't that different to your situation over there  :P

For now, my primary objective is my finals. And this looks neither good nor bad.

Head up Rob, you gonna find a way. In my appraisal of you I can trust in your skills and abilitys to solve problems. You'll solve this one, too. It's just a matter of time, no other way  ;)

Congratulation to the first anniversity of this page! I hope that I can say that next year, too! May this site last long and grow to a great community!  ;)

I'm here for a short time now, but in that few weeks I got the impression that I really like this place! It's always a pleasure to enter this board, read the forum and PMs, although I haven't posted that much as I would like to. The reason for that is the Internet bills and my parents who always scold me for that. But in a couple of weeks, this might change when I finally got my flatrate  ;) Then I will contribute and help in any way I can!

Right... thanks guys.  I hate that disgusting feeling that perhaps every place I've applied to just crumpled it up and tossed it out.   :-/

I continually hope for a call that I'm able to go to work somewhere...

You know, if this is the only reason you're on the internet, you're obviously not on it for it's intended purposes, ne?

Anyway, Rob, I hope you can fork up that cash. I'd like send you some, but I don't think anyone in my house would approve.

I dunno.  Isn't the internet supposed to be a collection of knowledge and data?  I think I'm contributing more to it than any of you slackers who just browse it.  *nudges Kiddo*

That's what I always thought but apparently it's the hidey hole of amature porn stars, porn junkies and puberty stricken teenage boys preying on women for unsolicited cyber sex.

Don't let the net fool you... it's all just a big porn market...

Well, you know Rob, most websites nowadays charge for admission. As I said at the beginning, I was actually willing to pay to become a member, and I think perhaps it would be a good way to siphon out the good members from the bad. AKA, the ones who are true fans of EH, and the ones who are just here for the sushi.  ;)
Title: Re: Ah, the site's 1st year...
Post by: larewen_evenstar on May 31, 2003, 01:39:48 pm
I'm not so sure that is actually a good idea, seeing as I don't have any money right now.
Maybe charge members who join in the future, but not the current members...okay, that is a bit harsh on them.
But I don't have the money to pay. I'll just occasionally, when I have the money, send you an envelope with a tenner in it.

How cruel.  :P  Nah, not yet... if my bandwidth were higher I could concider it, but even so, if I'm ever caught by anyone and found charging money for MP3's and other things (what the site holds) that's insult to injury.

Well would you send money to someone you never have met before in your entire life??? (nothing against you Rob!!!  ;) )

If you get known to the people you probably would, but right at the beginning? Naw! Then there wouldn't come any new members anymore. I think the system with the contributing is quite ok.

Well....actually if you're looking for porn in particulare, yes. But there is quite a bunch more things you can look for, for free.

I never would send anyone I don't know money through the net, regardless what he ever would give me for that!!!

Not a big fan of ebay or internet shopping ne?

I've been buying crap off the net for YEARS. Do I know the people who run Animecastle.com, Animenation.com,  Rightstuf.com, or Fujisan.com ? No... but I'll gladly send them money for my sweet sweet manga and anime! ;D

If I were on the other side of a "Pay to Enter" site about El-Hazard, I probably wouldn't.  The AnimeMusicVideos.org site wanted me to give them a donation or wait two weeks before I was allowed to start downloading!  Why would I want to pay for something I haven't ever even used yet?  Plus I don't think the cost is justified for charging me for stuff that they alone didn't really produce anyway.

Of course, alternatively Mark Engels just said something to the effect of "I tossed $25 their way since that was no big deal... but $25 is different to different people."  Which is true.  Maybe Mr. Engels can just toss money towards things at will, but I at the moment cannot be quite so loose.  ;)

But just to support my sister's point, it is true that if you buy off eBay you're effectively giving money to someone you don't even know.

True. But in that way, you know what you are paying for and you may be almost 100% sure to get it.

Something Rotten charges for membership, with the idea that paying people are going to take it seriously. But somehow, the whole idea just seems pretentious. What Rob could do is set up a PayPal account and slap a donation button on the bottom of the page, if people want to toss a few bucks his way to off-set the cost of internet bills, etc. You see these Donation buttons on everything from discussion boards to Bit Torrent trackers. Bandwidth ain't "free" like it was a couple years ago.

Belated congratulations, and many thanks for going to all this trouble for a bunch of people that you've never met.

I can't offer much advice on employment-- my expertise is limited to small custom databases, and my skill set is kinda out of date, and I've just learned that I may be unemployed myself within a few months.

I got started with Manpower.  They managed to get me a database programming gig, and it led to my first full-time job.  But if you can type, and if you can do word processing or data entry, a temp service will keep food on the table, and it may be your foot in the door.

Of course, I quit my first full-time job two years later, after it gave me a minor nervous breakdown.  But that's another story  :P

Anyways, I do hope you can keep this site going.  It looks like the message board has just had a growth spurt in the past week or two, while I was away.
